Can my wife work with a GC but without a SS number/card?

My wife just received her greencard in the mail today but she hasn't received a social security card/number. Would she still be able to work? Also, I've read that normally the social security card arrives before the GC which makes it really strange that she has not yet received one. On the DS-260, we stated that we wanted to have one sent to our address and our POE was 6 weeks ago. I read in another thread that, even if you apply for a SS# when filing, you still have to sometimes go to the SSA office and apply for one there. Is this true?

timeline in layman's terms:

Submitted I-130 (in person) - September 16th, 2014

I-130 Approved - November 12th, 2014

Received an e-mail prompting me and my wife to complete form DS-260 and submit some documents to a bank (NOA2?) - November 28th, 2014

Submitted documents to bank - December 4th, 2014

Received an e-mail instructing me and my wife to schedule an interview appointment - December 18th, 2014

Yeah since it has been a while a lot of people just go and apply for it at their local office and get it a week later might need to go ahead and do that .

HR will definitely ask for the SS in order for her to get paid. I'm not sure if they can hire her without it.

You can

Also need SSN, your tax id

Out of curiosity, what's the point of having a green card if you can't work with one?

Driver's license allows one to drive.

Passport allows one to travel outside of US.

Library card allow one to borrow books.

...

Green card allows non-US citizens to legally reside in US.

...

Social Security Card is needed so that a unique ID number is

associated to one's earnings, taxes, and future retirement benefits.

...

Each card serves different purpose.

That said, try going by without SS card, and report back to us on

how well that goes in terms of...

1) working

2) opening a bank account

3) applying for a loan

4) etc.

Can my wife work with a greencard but without a SS number/card?

no. not for a real employer.

study the I-9 , yes?

in the meantime, get into the SSA office on Monday, apply.

Go back Tuesday, receive the # (not the card) or learn of new problems.

Since it's 3 weeks past her POE date, she'll be found in the SAVE database when the SSA employee does a SAVE lookup, so she's eligible to receive the #.

ticking the 'thing' on the DS-260 or DS-230 is problematic, at best, because each POE 'behind-the-scenes' staff not have 100 percent reliability on their work. Sorry.

Out of curiosity, what's the point of having a green card if you can't work with one?

Please study the I-9 document, soonish. Nowish... Next-ish...

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
