Hello everyone!

I'm looking for advise.

Today I went to the postal mail to pick up my passport since I got my K-1 visa approved last Monday and before even handing the documents to me the lady from the postal service opened the sealed package

Soon as I saw the big red letters stating "DO NOT OPEN" I told her to stop but it was too late, it's clearly ripped open.

Has this happened to anyone else? What now?

Thanks in advance.

A postal worker has no rights to open your personal mail.

I'd complain if I were you also.

I would do more than just complain. Opening someone else's mail is illegal.

I don't think she meant wrong, she thought I was supposed to check it, however she certainly was impulsive since the package has a big sign with red letters that says "DO NOT OPEN" and in the bottom it says only the POE officer can open it.

Anyway, thanks to everyone. My priority is to solve this and then I'll deal with the postal service staff so that it never happens again.

Again, thanks for your input!

Hi, I'm going through a similar situation. Did you have to get an appointment to have them re-seal the package? How long did it all take? Did they resealed it right away? Please advise!!

Hi DanielaNRobert!

I didn't call, I just took the envelope to the embassy the very next day without an appointment.

They asked me to write a letter (addressed to the embassy) explaining what happened and I even had to go back to the mail service and gather the name of the lady and add it on the incident letter. Then they took the letter I wrote and gave me a new envelope.

Everything was fine, I was a little nervous about it when I flew to the US, but it all went fine.

You might want to go ahead and write a formal letter explaining what happened and gather names and ID numbers, sign and date it and bring it with your opened envelope to the embassy. Just explain to the security guys what happened and I'm sure they should help you letting you in.

Good luck!

I am so glad to hear everything worked out for you. I am so nervous because embassy is closed today so I cannot get anyone on the phone! but I am going tomorrow morning and see if they can let me in... I'll bring a letter (thank you so so much for this tip). Did they fix it for you right away?

Yeah, they fixed it right away. Don't be nervous, I know it is horrifying because the embassy and the whole process is no joke, but you guys are going to be fine. Just make sure you get there as early as possible (it might take some time waiting, but once you get to the window it'll be quick) and bring the letter explaining what happened, make sure you include names and ID numbers and sign it.

Best of lucks!
