I-485, Marriage Certificate

In the guide it is mentioned that this should be a certified copy. Yet in the I-485 instructions it simply states copy, is there a reason for this discrepancy? Should I use a certified copy, or simply a copy?

I had the same question. I just went ahead and paid the $7.00 to the court records and sent them a certified copy. Just to be safe.

I sent in a photocopy of my marriage cert. with my I-485 application, and it was accepted. I would follow the intructions on the form itself, if I were you because I don't think the guide has been updated lately. Good luck.

Go with your gut feeling, me thinks. I sent them a certified copy. It was worth the $5.50

'Certified copy' means it's got the courthouse certification on it. Like the $5.50 copy seldi mentioned.

You can send a photocopy of your certified copy and that is ok.

I'll add the voice to the choir. Yes, a plain photocopy is fine, you only need bring the original (which is called the "certified copy", BTW) to the interview. They may only cost $5, but you're wasting $5 by sending USCIS one, go get a burritto with that $5 instead, they're yummy.

I will send a photocopy of the certified copy. We have 2 and paid $2.50 for them. Someone should update the guides! It even mentions to put in the relatives (Non USC) Birth Certificate and Passport in the I-130 when their is no mention that it is required in the form instructions.

I don't like burritos, so to me, spending $5 on a burrito is a waste.

A penny saved is a penny earned! Why waste any amount of money and time on extra certified copies when a photocopy will do?
