If it's coming from your kitchen it could be the wind hitting the venting in the fan above the stove...that's the sound mine makes and it took me ages to figure out what it was.

Stay warm! We had a heck of a blizzard here the other day and we still haven't been able to dig out our car! :help:

Hope you have figured out what is causing the noise. It could be a lot of innocent things - as Jay Jay said - and my first choice - the ductwork or heating pipes expanding and contracting between getting warm and cooling off. Have you been able to see if the thump occurs around the same amount of time after the furnace turns on or off? Icicles hitting the roof are a possibility but they generally have more of a bump- slither sound as they slide down the roof. Having a vent or a shutter or something that isn't quite secure could be catching a breeze and banging against the house. Snow weight generally isn't going to make a sound until it is really extreme, then it will start to creak and groan, so I think you are probably safe for that. If you have a flat roof, yes, you will want to remove the snow. If it is peaked, they are generally designed so that the snow will slide or fall off on its on weight, especially when the sun comes out and warms up the roof.

I used to get loud thumps from my heating system in Canada, and here, after having a fire in the fireplace, the chimney duct will give a loud bang as it contracts as it cools. In this house I have the wierdest screeching, scritching squealing noise that was driving me crazy until I realized it is the branches of the rose bush that is right against the window rubbing against the glass when the wind blows:-).

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
