Anti-gun Michigan Black Caucus chairman arrested after shots fired

DAILYKENN.com -- The State Senator who represents Detroit has been arrested.

Virgil Smith is a suspect in connection with a shooting Sunday outside his west side home. News reports say Smith allegedly fired shots at his girlfriend and former wife while she was driving a 2015 Mercedes-Benz.

• Smith has a solid record opposing the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

The Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Ownership gave Smith a zero rating. The National Rifle Association awarded him a 'D' rating.

Smith notoriously voted against an amendment that would require increased gun training while making permit acquisition easier.

• Smith is serving his second term as State Senator. He had served three years as a State Representative.

He is chairman of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, and is currently serving a second term as a senator for the state's 4th Senate District.

The chairman of the Michigan Legislative White Caucus did not comment on the incident because there is no Michigan Legislative White Caucus.

Smith's father is Chief Wayne County Circuit Judge Virgil Smith.
