I disagree with this. you need to make sure you get at least a Tri Band. Only phones that are quad band are Motorola and in my opinion they are junk. I have one. the suck. I have cingular and I wish I got a one yr

Just about every cell phone manufacturer makes a quad band GSM phone. I have a Palm treo 650 that is quad band. Just off the top of my head I know that Samsung, Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, and LG make quad band phones. I'm sure there's a host of others. Be a little more careful before you give out such blatantly wrong information.

Hmmm, my quick search on Nokia's US web site didn't turn up any quad-band phones.

I started with ATT for their GSM service before they combined with Cingular. Wanted the GSM so I could use the phone in Russia. I chose the Nokia 6200 as it is a tri-band phone, and Nokia phones are very easy to unlock to be able to use another companies SIM card. You can unlock many Nokia phones online for free or pay a few dollars to have someone generate the unlock code.

I have a Beeline SIM card with a permanent Russian phone number, and that triband phone works great everywhere I 've been in Russia. I bought a new unlocked Nokia 3100 on ebay for $65 and took it to my girl. It's working great for her.

Another nice feature of having a GSM phone is that you can buy any phone you want and use it with your SIM card without changing or renewing your contract. If I were to resign a contract now I couldn't get half as good a deal as I did from ATT, and I am staying with that old contract.

Hmmmm I did also, I did not see quadband phones. I know in the Philippines you can get it unlock anywhere a nokia. really cheap like 2 or 3 usdollars.

My husband really really wants to have a phone with a chip so that he can use the same phone in Morocco that he uses here, but use his old *Moroccan* phone number while he is in Morocco (as he still has the chip and is paying for the number...yes I think it's rather silly)

So I tried to google it, and found out that I want a GSM phone that takes a SIM chip, but that didn't help me figure out which phone companies have them (ie Verizon, Cingular, Sprint)

Does anybody know?

The best value would be net10. 10 cents a minute whereever in the US you call and whenever you call. Prepaid. And long air time. You can change the simcards and use it anywhere with any operator in the world.

It uses cingular's network so it has wide coverage.

A couple years ago I bought a Motorola V400 through Cingular so that my wife could use it while in Vietnam and the US. She just had to replace the sim card when in Vietnam with one from a local company. When she got her Visa she replaced the sim card back to the Cingular Chip and called me from the Airport (using our family plan minutes)

It did have to be the quad-band type. International cell-phone rates are very expensive (and the quality sucks from Vietnam) and I wouldn't recommend calling back to the US with one.

By the way, she gave the cell phone to my daughter last year and it crapped out. A $450 (retail) paper-weight.

Mine was $40 and G's was $100 with a new 1-year contract. Thus far we're thrilled with T-Mobile (and it should be noted we paid the $350 fee to break our Verizon contract because we couldn't take it anymore).

Now I'm bummed I recently re-signed my contract with Verizon

I have Cingular, three band GSM phone which I got when I signed up with them. Its working just fine for me in Europe and it was not unlocked.

I looked on Nokia and they dont have a quad band. I looked on LG web site and they dont have a quad band.. so you are also giving out false information. Sony has one but it is a new phone and it is not on the market so as of now they dont have a quad band.. 75% wrong..
