Agreed. It is strange to want to keep alive imagery synonymous with violent division. After all, is it an image that black Americans would find palatable? Maybe, I don't know - but I would guess not.

Its unfortunate that people are so focused on their own right to self expression that they do so in ways that completely disregard any sensitivity to others, their own countrymen and women to whom that image symbolises racial division and oppression.

Its also not surprising that it keeps popping up in tea party rallies.

If I were you I wouldn't expect anything to change anytime soon.

I think it's funny that it's considered incredibly offensive to wear a t shirt with a swastika on it, but imagery of the old USSR doesn't get anything like the same reaction.

I don't expect anything to change. I just like to point out the hypocrisy.

But the blame is not solely on the kids, it is on our school system as well for not properly educating them.

I did some really stupid things as a teenager that I really wish I could go back and change. I don't think it's ignorance so much as it is just being young and foolish. Now if these were all 30 somethings in that pic, I would definitely have a different opinion.

see i just don't think that's an accurate assesment of how many people view the flag. lots of history buffs, etc.. personally, i would be more upset about all the 'jocko' style lawn jockey's displayed prominantly in people's yards around here..

And if you don't, I am sure they thought to look up images of the confederate flag to see what it is associated with. They are seniors...

Have you never done anything that you knew was wrong, but for whatever reason you did it anyway? I have a list bout a mile long, the majority of the list is from age 13 to age 25, then it kinda peters out cause I started to mature and think of the repercusions before I did things. Most teenagers are not capable of doing that to the point where being reasonable outweighs being cool.

These kids did not pose in front of a graphic picture. They are standing in front of a flag that they may, or may not, fully understand it's meaning.

The fairest thing to say is that there's a lot of confusion in the USA over its historic symbology. This is a country that doesn't have a single female presence on its currency and still venerates people like Andrew Jackson who is regarded by many as being responsible for being the architect of native American genocide.
