Since I live in the north….I don't care much for the confederate flag……but, I understand some people like it. As far as I am concerned the war is over.

However it seems nobody has read vals comment that I found very telling. I assume she meant blacks were wearing the confederate flag/stickers/tee shirts. Maybe she can clear it up?

something like the origins of the widespread use of the n word. it's a combination of not knowing history and taking back the power of the word/symbol and environment. these white/black & interracial kids growing up together in a rural setting, it's weird but..i'm sure most older people thought my generation looked silly with the whole 'wannabe' trend.

Well, B_J is an unrepentant wearer of pleated trousers, so that probably does make him an old. :D

I also can't figure out kids today, so I too am an old. :(

Sure, there is a very small chance they didn't know.

did you grow up in mississippi or in the "real" south? a confederate flag in mississippi has a bit different weight than up my way, i would think.

While preparing for this week's sentencing of Dale Mardis in the 2001 murder of code enforcement inspector Mickey Wright, federal authorities inadvertently may have solved another murder not even on their radar.

A witness in the Mardis case told investigators Thursday afternoon that Mardis, a former gun dealer, also killed a former Memphis psychologist in 1998 by beating him to death with a hammer and then burning the body in Mississippi, just as he did Wright's three years later.

The bizarre turn of events prompted Mardis to strike a deal with federal prosecutors, agreeing Tuesday to a life sentence for the shooting death of Wright.

Mardis, 57, also agreed to plead guilty in state Criminal Court to the murder of child psychologist Dr. Henry P. Ackerman, the incentive being that he will serve his sentences concurrently in the federal system.

"As recently as last week, more of the true nature of Mr. Mardis has become known," said U.S. Dist. Judge Bernice Donald. "He is a person who is violent and indifferent to the pain and suffering of others. He has shown a depraved indifference to life ... and an absence of humanity."

Mardis, who wore a lime-green prison jumpsuit, sat silently in a wheelchair with an often bemused look on his face. He declined when offered a chance to speak.

In the courtroom was Wright's widow, Frances, and more than a dozen other family members and friends.

"Mickey would be so happy to know we did not give up pursuing one of Satan's disciples -- Dale Mardis -- and we will see this to the end," said Frances Wright. "It is both sad and shocking that there are still people in this country who would murder another human solely based on race."

Mickey Wright, 46, disappeared on April 17, 2001, after he was assigned to investigate a complaint at A Car Lot, an auto sales and repair shop at 2524 Lamar, whose owners leased the property from Mardis.

His government truck was found burned 10 days later in Marshall County, Miss., but Wright's body was never found.
