Killing over a drawing is sick and wrong. Period. But these folks knew what the possible outcome of this event would be. In short, tens of millions of Muslims all over the world sympathize with the goals or tactics of terrorist groups – or both. That support is stronger outside the West, but it is present even in the West. Islamist extremism is not a passing or fading phenomenon – it is shockingly consistent over time. And the West’s attempts to brush off the ideology of fanaticism has been an overwhelming failure.

The Christian Science Monitor reported in September that the top European Union counter-terrorism official estimated that roughly 3,000 Europeans had gone to fight in Syria, although this figure also counted the dead and was later reduced to 2,000. Well G, considering the massacre that took place in France over the same thing, not to mention they made it a point to hire security that looked like a Special Forces reunion, I'd wager they were counting on something happening. If this was a truly free speech event and no malice was intended, why have security?

And don't forget, they are 100,000 Muslims living in that town. They all skipped the event. The gunmen drove from two states over.
