There have been several incidents posted here over the past 6 months or so with people being arrested 20 times and never did jail time. I ask again, at what point is a person responsible for their own behavior?

I think I understand the prison thing, but in many of these cases that isn't the issue.

One of my characters is a black comic book character called Eli Bradley. He's over six feet tall, muscly and has all the same abilities as Captain America. He lives in New York City. The result of me playing this character is that I have DONE the research. At length. I have looked up the prison statistics to figure out exactly what the demographics of his neighbourhood are likely to be. I have looked up the court records. I have looked up the arrest records. I have looked up what his local mosque is like (portions of his family are black converts to Islam). I have literally read the records for five different states in order to be able to play the challenges that he would face in his day to day life as a result of being a black teenager in NYC, being raised by his grandparents, and looking like a big, powerful man. It might sound silly, the reason why I've done all this research. Just for a game, right? I just want to get it RIGHT and give a realistic view of another person's life, that's what roleplaying is ABOUT. Well, regardless of why, I've done the research. At length. If I were at home, I could pull out my other laptop and get it working long enough to get my bookmarks up.

The statistics are HORRIFYING. A horrifying number of black men are on death row for crimes that have since been proven, through DNA, that white men committed. A horrifying number of black men get cited or ticketed for traffic crimes that either they did not commit or that white people driving down the same street and committing the same crime would not get cited or ticketed for--and many of these men go to jail for it. Same with drug crimes. Same with EVERY crime.

Eli is one of my favourites and I want to know, Marvel, WHERE ARE THE BRADLEYS? They freaking wrote out Eli, after writing out Josiah. They LITERALLY put Eli on a freaking bus to Arizona and boom, it's all over for him and I am FURIOUS. Patriot was an AMAZING character and they could have done SO MUCH with him. They used him in amazing ways as part of a really good redemption arc that touched on drug issues and I loved him so much. Eli and Billy are my two favourite Young Avengers, very closely followed by Kate, because who DOESN'T love a teenage girl who's got her stuff in gear and who can show up the male character whose name she took EVERY DAY of the week.

I'm actually the comic fan, my wife is the one I'm slooooooooowly educating. One step at a time, I'm introducing her. I started with Kate, because she's got a Thing for really strong female characters.

Anyway. Yes. Eli. Eli is awesome and I rp him online because he DID NOT GET ENOUGH STORY and when I one day write for Marvel, I WILL MAKE SURE HE DOES and I want to get him RIGHT.

I've spent HOURS researching crime stats and attitudes, right down to how when a person in a position of authority looks at two six year old children, one white and one black, they will almost ALWAYS declare the black child to be closer to eight. That's a TERRIFYING statistic, (and I'm sure you know this, but I'm saying it for the benefit of others watching) because it means that people in authority are assuming that the black child has an eight year old's ability to understand cause and effect and therefore will punish the six year old black child as they would an eight year old. The kids never get a chance to be children. By the time (and again, I'm sure you know this! But others are reading) a black boy reaches the age of fourteen, people in positions of authority will guess him to be between 18 and 20. That means, for those of you watching at home, that a police officer will look at that fourteen year old's stupid, impulsive 14 year old actions and give him the same charges as they would an adult. While if a white fourteen year old boy does that same thing, he will more likely be seen as closer to fourteen.

I don't understand how people can't see this. I honestly don't know how so many black people in America manage to grow up to be upstanding citizens when the decks are literally stacked against them from kindergarten. When a black kindergartener is something in the ballpark of 8 or 10 times more likely to have the police called if he or she acts out than a white kindergartener does, when that black child is something like 12 or 15 times more likely to be suspended from school IN KINDERGARTEN for the same stupid stuff a white kindergartener does, how does ANY black person in America manage to live to adulthood and NOT end up a criminal?

Cross-race identification bias[edit]

This effect refers to the decreased ability of people of one race to recognize faces and facial expressions of people of another race. This differs from the cross-race bias because this effect is found mostly during eyewitness identification as well as identification of a suspect in a line-up. In these situations, many people feel as if races other than their own look alike, and they have difficulty distinguishing between members of different ethnic groups. Cross-race identification bias is also known as the misinformation effect since people are considered to be misinformed about other races and have difficulty identifying them. In a study dealing with eyewitness testimony, investigators examined forty participants in a racially diverse area of the US. Participants watched a video of a property crime being committed, then in the next 24 hours came to pick the suspect out of a photo line-up. Most of the participants in the study either misidentified the suspect or stated the suspect was not in the line-up at all. Correct identification of the suspect occurred more often when the eyewitness and the suspect were of the same race.^[22] In another study, 86 convenience store clerks were asked to identify three customers: one white, one black, and one Mexican, all of whom had purchased in the store earlier that day. The clerks tended to identify customers belonging to their own race accurately, but were more likely to make errors when attempting to identify other races members.^[23] Meanwhile, another study found that "alcohol intoxication reduces the own-race bias in face recognition," albeit by impairing accurate perception and leaving in place or increasing random error rather than by improving facial recognition of members of other groups.^[24]

There has been some disagreement about the consistency of the own-race bias. However, data gathered from multiple studies does show that the own-race bias is consistent.^[25] The own-race bias occurs in people of all races.^[25] Since eyewitness identification can be problematic, researches have started to conduct studies of own-race biases using more forensics.^[25] This kind of research needs to pay more attention to a target’s distinctive features and level of attractiveness.^[25] If a target is very distinctive or very attractive, it could reduce the cross-race effect because that person would be easier to identify.^[25]

Psychological experts all agree that the cross-race effect is a common occurrence during in-court testimony when an eyewitness is trying to remember a person.^[26] In order to reduce the cross-race effect there have been multiple changes to how policemen handle eyewitness identification.^[27] For example, to reduce the cross-race identification bias Britain has a law that states police must include the suspect in a line up with at least eight other people who share similar characteristics to him or her.^[27] This forces the eyewitness to use his or her memory of the suspects features, not the suspect's race, as a form of identification.^[27]

You realize that lineups are literally the single LEAST reliable method of determining a criminal's identity because human memories are giant clusterf###s of memory damnation? And that even RACE isn't accurate in a rather large proportion of suspect descriptions given? Forget cross-race bias, eyewitness testimony is the least reliable type of evidence there is, after calling up Miss Cleo and asking for a reading from the crystal ball, of course.
