Name Change in some places...

I have a question about changing my name.

I plan on taking my husband's last name when we get married. However, at work, I plan on using my maiden name.

Question 1 - If I change my name with social security, do I have to change my name at work?

Question 2 - What happens at tax time when the name on the W2 is different than what social security has?

I'm wondering about this because I'm pre-emptively trying to complete as much of the I-485 as I can, and didn't know what name to put down for me...

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Someone PM'ed me an answer, figured I'd post it here if anyone else wants to know:

How can I make sure that the employee's SSN and name given to me are correct?

You should ask to see the SSN card, although the employee is not required to show the card unless it is readily available. You should record the name and SSN shown on the card in your business' personnel and payroll records that will be used to prepare W-2 reports. If the employee indicates he or she prefers to use a different name for employment purposes, advise the employee that you must use the name as it currently appears on the card. Also advise the employee to request an updated Social Security card with a name change and to show it to you so that you can update your records and so that your records and the Social Security records will agree.

I got married and I have not changed the name on my social security card to my married name. My Form W-2 is in my married name but my tax forms came in my maiden name. Should I file with my maiden name or married name?

It is important that the name the Social Security Administration (SSA) has in its system for your social security number agrees with the name on your tax return. You have a choice. You can file with your maiden name and contact the Social Security Administration after you file your return. Or, if you have enough time before the due date of your return, you can contact the Social Security Administration and have your records changed. Please wait 10 days to file your tax return.

I didi the same thing - changed my name everywhere except for work. So...

1. Yes, if you change your name with SSA, you have to change it at work.

2. You should file taxes under the name that is on your SS card.

Well, it's been answered already, but I thought I'd chip in anyway :)

Filed AOS from F-1
Green Card approved on 01/04/07
