I am USC father of our 20 month old son born in Germany to his German mother. I was present at birth and I am the father on his German birth certificate.

I have not submitted the petition for spousal visa, but will do so soon.

Will getting a US passport for our son affect the spousal visa process?

Has anyone gone through the duel passport process for their children?

You need to file a CRBA at the US Embassy on the country that your son was born. http://germany.usembassy.gov/acs/reportsofbirthabroad-new/

It will not affect if you file for spousal visa process.

I've just done it in Ethiopia. I think its pretty straightforward, but you may need to provide evidence depending on your situation.

You need to provide evidence of relationship, presence at time of conception, and physical presence in the US for at least 5 years. There is an interview that you, your spouse, and the child will attend.

I prepared a lot of relationship evidence but wasn't asked for it. The CO explained "You've been in Ethiopia for a while...." My expired passport exit/entry stamps showed that I had been residing in the US.

The embassy's website should have information on the process - I emailed my embassy and they sent me a checklist to follow. Also, the crba form comes with instructions about what supporting documents you need.

I think if anything it will only help your spousal visa application to provide the crba as evidence. Anyway, it only takes a couple weeks for it to be printed so you should do the crba now.
