Received SSN

In my attempt to embrace my new homeland, I went to the library to get a card. I showed my Passport/Visa as ID, however couldn't get one! They wanted "official government mail" with my home address before issuing me a card. *sigh*

A week later I went to the SSN local office and my information was not on the system, so was told that I should get a letter in a few weeks if the information they did put into the system matched with DHS information. I was told that even when the information does match up, that this was no guarantee I would get a number or be issued a card.

One week and two days later I received my SSN card in the mail! I was so excited! I've already memorized my number.

Now I can take my "offical government mail" to the library and get a card!

I still don't have mine memorized!! lol But I managed to get a library card even before I moved down here, guess Arlington VA isn't that strict.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

"Official government mail?" What's the supposed to mean? To get a library card, all I've ever done is show them my DL.

Of course, I'm a USC, so it's probably a little easier for me...but I certainly don't see why other documentation wouldn't work.

Good thing you have your's SSN remembered already. You'll need it for a billion things while you're here. I have almost rememberd my wifes now as I have to remember hers too for somethings. But the SSN gets asked by a lot of gov't things and your bank, and investements if you have it all to verify you're who you say you are.

Of course there's a million scam artists too that would love to know it as well...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I was shocked that I got a library card already. I just walked in, showed my CDN driver's licence, and told them my address. I couldn't remember my phone number (give me a break I moved here 2 days before), and they told me no problems, just give them a call when I got home!! :) I think it's the advantage of small town USA- they have less "red tape". :)

A library card is a great thing to have. Even in a small town, you can use the computers to get on the internet. Ours rents movies for a dollar, and loans music CDs. They also have readings, shows, and a free movie night. You can read newspapers and magazines galore and oh yes, did I mention they have a large collection of books?

I haven't gotten a library card yet but I intend too...

I think all I need is my DL and a piece of mail with our address on it, something like a utility bill....

well i just did a search and this is what I found... of course this is for California...

Patrons must present either 1. an unexpired California driver's license OR 2. an unexpired California Identification Card. If the ID does not show current address, patrons may present one of the following in addition: 1. a utility bill, 2. a bank statement, 3. an unexpired California Department of Motor vehicles registration form, OR 4. a paycheck stub. Patrons must be 18 or older to apply for a card. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

and as my DL does not have my current address on it, I guess I need to bring in a utility bill too...
