Not quite sure if my problem falls under this category but I'll ask anyways

Well the good news. My wife had her interview and was approved for a K-3 Visa yesterday.

Bad news. She changed her name some time after the papers had been filed ( added a middle name and changed her last name ) and once the consulate recognized this yesterday, they told her that a new background check would have to be done. Obviously it makes sense that they have to do it, but I am just wondering if anyone here has any experience with this sort of thing or an expectation on how long it might take? ( ie days weeks months) Unfortunately for her she has a plane ticked departing on Friday, so unless some sort of miracle takes place she is going to have to cancel the ticket and reconsider her options.

The consulate told her that everything was done electronically and that they had put a request in for the background check while she was still there. Other than that they could really give her no time frame. Any experience or advice in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

was it a legal name change??? like was it done legally with a lawyer/court/deed poll?

or was it just a "new name" that she begun to use???

were they hard on her when she announced that or were they understanding about it?

Oct 29th -First phone call
Dec 25th -She purposed and i said Yes!
May 10th I-130 Packet and Packet 3 sent off to me by the U.S. Consulate
May 16th -Received Packets 1-3 from the U.S. consulate
June 29th -I arrived in Puerto-Rico!
July 2nd -Married in Mayaguez, Puerto-Rico and also got our interview date for September 6th
August 17th -We arrived in Australia to file for Sep. 6th
September 6th - Filed DCF in Sydney and approved 1 hour later!
September 12 -Received my passport with the visa and yellow packet
November 24th -POE.......Guam,USA
December 12, 2005-Green Card arrived in the mail
September 11, 2007 -Filed I-751 on conditions
September 17 -VSC Receives my I-751 and issues NOA1
Oct 10 -Had biometrics taken in San Juan, Puerto Rico ASC
Oct 12 -Touched.
Aug 21, 2008 -Approved!...........finally
Sep 17, 2008 -Mailed off N-400
Oct 22, 2008 -Biometrics taken in San Juan ASC
Feb 12, 2009 -N-400 Interview
Feb 26, 2009 -Oath.....the end.

The name change was a legal name change. She added her previous middle name that she removed 10 years ago and changed her last name to my name. I don't think they were hard on her about it, but they obviously would have to run extra background checks.

and so if you ever just "used" a name that was NEVER LEGALLY changed,...would you still have to put it in as "other names used" on the forms, or not worry about it because it was never a legal name change and just "a name" you went under for a few years.?

Beats the fu ck out of me. Moral of the story is don't change your name after important immigration documents have been filed in another name.
