This comment made me laugh...all the ppl here are correct its a scam, when you get a call never

give out your SS, address, info about you or husband. never say you are alone....your husband is

asleep or in the shower

I guess you are very new to the country, if police, or utility workers come to your door never let

them in, call the police to find out if they sent the police....and never let anyone in to use your phone,

even a little old lady whose car broke sown, tell her call out the # and you will call for her...relax no

one is going to arrest you (F).......VJ is such a great help at times she knew she could reach ou

t here for swift answer

Big thanks to you Jawaree, you did a great help

I am an enrolled agent, professional tax preparer, and that is a common scam. Irs will always contact you in writting and never ever request payment over the phone. And depending of the particular situation they will have specific offices call you and not from a new york call center.

I think they have office and a multiple phone numbers , may be they are in India and just using New York phone number

Typical US scam, nothing to this, was not professional, when the ""tax man calls"" he identifies him or herself, with their employees, or "badge number."

Been there done that!

The IRS does not call you. They will send you letters and have you call them but they do not call you. I have been doing taxes for ten years and I know this for a fact. Unless you call them first and requested a call back for some reason.

People still believe these things? Common sense folks. Not only that but the IRS doesn't call you. There is something called "process" ... just like you can't CALL someone to get your visa done.

New immigrants are in a very vulnerable position, they don't know alll of the ins and outs of how our country works, so yes a lot of them will take this seriously. That's why immigrants are the target group for this scam.

what to do now? i heard people talking close to him like he is really working in office

what to do? i thought im in trouble because he was talking about the court and case .......... and why i send money to family sometimes and if i tell somebody about that , and he was taking about homeland security he scared me , i feel im in trouble , im still at the house , he is still on hold thinking im driving to the bank to get cash money and to tell me what to do next ?

The IRS does not call . They always send a letter. ALWAYS !! I hope you didn't give any information. I would repor the phone number to the IRS and to the police. Just incase they steal your identity, it would be easier to trace. Never , ever talk to anyone on the phone who claim to be the IRS. The IRS does not work that way.

Hang up and block the number.

That's not totally accurate. Although in their situation it sounds accurate, I have had the IRS call me with no letters sent ever. They scheduled an interview and that was it I was on my merry way. The IRS does have phones believe it or not, but they will not ask you to send money more likely they will ask for your address to send a info. Just like immigrations most of the time sends out a letter, I am sure there are times they do call or even visit someone.

There are many IRS scams going around. I received an email the other day to "log into" my IRS e-filing account. The log in page asked for person information such as names, earnings and so on. The IRS will NEVER request this information in an email.

Rawas, I hope you didn't give them a penny. It was a SCAM. The IRS does not give anybody a one hour deadline to pay up and make their taxes go away - they send official letters... but there are people who like to try to panic you into giving them money for nothing. Telling you that it had nothing to do with your husband and that you had to keep it secret and deal with it RIGHT NOW is a dead giveaway.

I had a phone call the other day from somebody saying they could 'help me with my credit card interest rate'. It was very early in the morning and they flustered me, so I handed the phone over to my husband and he took five seconds to recognise it as a potential scam and hang up. If I'd been asleep enough to fall for it, next thing they would have been harvesting my credit card information so they could steal my money....
