i'd say go to a chiro.. there are some that actually aren't expensive (here the average is 100 bucks per session, i found one for 50)... and if u want medicine.. best pain killer evarr (and actually the one im not allergic to) Celebrex... zomg!

also go to swim if u can, swimming always helps

Celebrex is actually a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (the type is a COX-2 inhibitor, but I doubt anyone here really wanted to know that...) and was originally marketed alongside such well-known medications as Bextra and Vioxx, although Celebrex wasn't pulled from the market due to side-effects. There is one caution with Celebrex, however. If you're allergic to sulfa drugs, do not take Celebrex.

Tramadoll prescription medicine or the Chiropractor.

Tramadol is a good analgesic, but that's it. It's only a painkiller. Still, if you're using it in conjuction with a chiropractor, then it'd probably be something good to try out. I've seen it as Ultram in the United States. You can also get Tramadol mixed with Tylenol in drugs such as Ultracet and Tramacet.

Lortab

The only problem I see with Lortab is that it's Hydrocodone, which is better known as the narcotic Vicodin. That's habit forming. It's great for pain, but the last thing anyone wants to do is take a drug that can become habit forming...unless absolutely necessary, that is.

Nessa,

Buy Charles a How-to book on therapeutic massage. Seriously, a good massage does wonders for relaxing tight muscles. As for long term care - I'd recommend stretching and strengthening your back muscles - how about signing up for a yoga class? :star:

My thoughts exactly, Massage and exercise. I would go a step further and after a good stretch, work out with light weights to focus and strengthen your back muscles. One of the main reasons for back pain is weak muscles in that area. I did say light weights though.

Good luck.

Yup. If you've had allergic reactions to sulfa drugs in the past, then it's not recommended that you take Celebrex. Does this mean you absolutely positively 100% will get a negative reaction if you do take it? No, it doesn't. However, there's a much greater chance of something going wrong.

Of course...it's also recommended that people with asthma not take Celebrex either, and I have asthma and I've used Celebrex infrequently in the past. So I suppose the warning is more or less there to "cover all the bases." ;)

yea ur right.. well actually i try to not take medicine for anything.. a) i only get a small supply of personal medicines -antibiotics, pain killers- whenever I go to Mexico (ya, same medicines, cheaper).. B) doctors here are ridiculously expensive (even with insurance)..

it's funny how people go to the doctor for the slightest thing.. oh my knee hurts, i better go to the doctor, ohh i have a stomachache for more than 2 hours i better go to the doctor.. lawl.. i try to do it naturally, sports, and fruits! and if i get a headache or my leg hurts, if it's not a tormenting pain, i don't take anything.. last year i only requested 1 sick day.. and that was it, so it works

About acupuncturist I could try, I've heard some people saying it didn't work for them and since I have to pay entirely for it (the insurance doesn't cover), I am not 100% sure it'll work for me and with all the K-1, AOS, trips, etc, we're saving money now, I guess I might pass on that, at least for now. I would like to try in the future, you never know.

physical therapy!!!!!! i'm currently seeing one for a problem i thought would never go away and i'm definitely improving by each session....

That worked for me in the past, A LOT. That's the first thing I will try.

...how about signing up for a yoga class?

I bought a yoga video once, but I have no patience to do that. Too calm, I'm more into lifting weight, martial arts, dance :P

...also go to swim if u can, swimming always helps

I've done that in the past. When I was a kid and again in 2002. It does help. But then again the money issue, maybe in the future, when I'm finally working.

The only problem I see with Lortab is that it's Hydrocodone, which is better known as the narcotic Vicodin. That's habit forming. It's great for pain, but the last thing anyone wants to do is take a drug that can become habit forming...unless absolutely necessary, that is.

That's exactly why I was asking for advice on over-the-counter, because I know they are less strong medicines and they are not (usually) drugs that can become habit forming, something I prefer to avoid and also I would take them just on those days I'm really in pain.

My thoughts exactly, Massage and exercise. I would go a step further and after a good stretch, work out with light weights to focus and strengthen your back muscles. One of the main reasons for back pain is weak muscles in that area. I did say light weights though.

Good luck.

I've been exercising since I was little, ballet classes, jazz classes, swimming classes, street dance, capoeira, muay thai and gym. Nowadays I've been only working out at the gym, doing cardio and lifting weight. Exercising also doesn't seem to help or make it worse, unless for example there were a couple of days that I was exagerating on the weight I'd put for the squats, I was using 140 lbs, more than I was weighting, and I felt a lot of pain after that. So I lowered the weight. The rest doesn't make much difference. What is good about gym is that working out is good for your posture, which (if you have a bad posture) can lead to back pain.

...doctors here are ridiculously expensive (even with insurance)..

I agree.

Thanks all for your help  . I've been using heating pad on my back and it works (while I'm using and a few minutes after) then the pain is back.

So the most wise choice for me really is go see someone and try physical therapy again. Worked for me in the past.

Nessa..

I am a Acupuncturist... in my practice I get quite alot of Low back pain, shoulder pain and sciatica pain. Treatment is very successful. However I do understand that there is the cost factor. I have a few things that I always suggest to my patients to use.

For muscle pain I always express to them NOT to use ICE.. unless it is trauma.. Ice will constrict the muscles tighter. I suggest them to use HEAT.. What I find best is use of a microwave heat bag filled with FLAX seed.

flax seed provide a gentle, moist heat, which promotes healing, while their therapeutic weight is gentle and conforming to your body.

Flax seeds are flower seeds, rather than grain (such as rice). They contain 30-40% oil, which remains inside the seed to be warmed again and again. Most grain products loose their ability to retain heat as the water cooks out of them over time. (If using rice -- it easily burns.. and smells very bad. )

Flax seed neck pillows should be heated for 2-3 minutes in a microwave to provide a moist heat that is very effective in relieving pain. As the muscles relax, circulation increases. Gentle continuous warmth calms and soothes, aiding the natural healing processes of the body.

Heated flax seed is long lasting. It retains heat for 30 minutes or longer and can be reheated over and over again with no diminution of effectiveness. This is because the flax seed is a flower seed about 33% of which is oil. This oil, which remains inside the seed, holds the microwaved heat for a long while giving off continuous warmth. Since the shell of the seed is soft it allow moisture from the air to be absorbed for the constant release of moist heat. This is unlike rice bags that tend to develop a bad odor with continuous heating. Bags made of grain products tend to lose their effectiveness as their water content dries out.

I make bags out of simple cloth sometimes i use a old pillowcase and cut it down to size about the size of notebook paper. 11x7. I put in about 2 pounds of flax seed in each bag.

I also send my patients home with a product called SOMBRA.. it is very similar to Tigerbalm (white) but not as greasy. many chiropractic offices sell it. I have them massage the liniment on the area then place the heat bag ontop to allow a deeper penetration of the analgesic.

There is a homeopathic tablet I also like to use. It is called Formula 303.

Ingredients are Valarian, Passiflora, Magnesium Carbonate. The combination of these three work on the muscles providing a Natural Muscle relaxant, Relief for Muscle spasm, tension and stress.

I suggest if you do not have the funds for a Acupunture treatment to call a few Chiropractic offices or Acupuncture offices and ask if they carry either of these products. The Sombra and Formula 303. Very inexpensive to purchase. I know that when I have a person call asking if i have product I do not have a problem selling to them.

As far as flax seed.. there is a store here in Oregon called Winco... they have the bins with grains. It is the least expensive place I have found to get the seed.. I pay about .43 cent a lb. compared to Safeway at $1.42 a lb.

Here is a website that talks about corn.or flax bags but she has some good patterns for the bags.

Flaxbag instructions

Best of luck .. hope you feel better..

...doctors here are ridiculously expensive (even with insurance)..

Really? Huh. Whenever I go to the doctor, it's a $20 co-pay. That's it. Seems pretty fair to me.

Whenever I want medication, it's usually about $10 too. I guess I just have better medical insurance than you do. ;)

DeadPoolX, in Brazil we pay if we want health insurance or we can get it for free (which sucks because the government can't provide health care for everybody). The ones we pay for, we pay an ammount of money monthly and when we need to go to the doctor we don't have to pay anything else. It covers everything (except the medicine, which sometimes covers a % of it). So I was impressed when I moved here that even tho you pay for health care you still have to pay when you go to the doctor.

flax seed provide a gentle, moist heat, which promotes healing, while their therapeutic weight is gentle and conforming to your body...

Last year I was talking to this doctor (friend of my mom's) he's an orthopedist, it wasn't an appointment, just casual talk, and he said that cold water is better for the muscle pain than hot water. I was surprised and my mom said ''see you shouldn't be taking showers so hot''' but I didn't follow his advice, I still believe that heating pads, hot showers help with muscles pain, I feel more relaxed after them.

About flaxseed, I eat them on a daily basis. Today for example I mashed a banana and put flaxseed and cinnamon. I don't know about heating bags with it, but I know flaxseed has anti-inflammatory benefits among other like protection against heart disease, cancer and diabetes, cholesterol-lowering benefits, it's rich in fiber, and more.

Here's a link flaxseed
