Back and Neck pain

I've been struggling with muscle pain for years, and I had one over-the-counter muscle relaxant that worked just fine for me in Brazil, but since I've moved here I've tried Advil (ibuprofen), non-aspirin acetaminophen, bayer extra-strenght (aspirin + caffeine) and none seems to work for me.

The one that used to work for me in Brazil had these 3 components: Dipirona sódica - cafeína anidra - citrato de orfenadrina. I can't seem to translate them, with the exception of the caffeine.

I was wondering if someone here would know something that has similar components, or something that works for muscle pain. Any help is appreciated.

Nessa,

When I get back and muscle pain I visit a chiropractor and after a few therapies I'm back in track. I suffer from scoliosis and the neck & back pain can be very disturbing. The one I visit also gives muscular massages and that helps a lot. I also take Advil.

Hope you can feel better soon!

Yeah never went to a chiropractor, maybe I should try that (if my insurance covers it :P ) In the past I had some physical therapy and that helped me a lot. I started having back pain when I used to be part of this dance group and was also taking Capoeira classes. I hurt myself back then and it's been bothering me ever since.

Nessa, I'd try a good acupuncturist. Seriously helped me

My brother went to an acupunturist and got great results. He was almost confined to a bed because of back pain and now he's fine. I have never been treated by one, just know that it worked wonderful for my bro.

nessa, I used to suffer from recurring back pain until I started yoga lessons and ballet. My problems were stemming from being hunched at a computer all day, and so the time stretching and such really has helped strengthen my core and improve my posture.

When the pain was really bad, I learned that synthetic opiates were really a lot of fun, and that there's a really good reason the doc doesn't allow refills.

When my grandmother was alive, she had a bout of horrible sciatica pain to the point where she was practically bed ridden in her late 60s :( She tried all sorts of docs and pills and procedures and nothing helped....we found this awesome acupuncturist and my grandmother walked out of his office and pushed the wheelchair to the car herself!!!!!

Seriously amazing work. That man has since retired and I've moved, and I've been too caught up in my own stuff to find someone new, but I need to make it a priority because it was so beneficial to me, and my loved ones.

Yeah my brother could not move without being on excruciating pain. He was almost a hunchback and could barely walk or move :( After a few therapies, he started to improve and recovered movement. It was really amazing. Now he's back to normal.

I personally visit the chiro cuz my insurance covers it and has great results for me. They give me the electric stem therapy and the massage bed, I always fall asleep ... zzzzzzz....

If you're looking for a medication, then I'd suggest Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine) as that's good for muscle pain. Do take note, however, that this drug (like other medications of its class) does not actually affect the muscles directly, but instead acts centrally in the brain. This takes on the form -- more or less -- of a total body relaxant; in other words, it has an overall sedative effect. That indirectly affects the skeletal muscle system and therefore allows the muscles to relax.

Flexeril is prescription-only, so you'd need to see a physician for it. Do not take my word for it -- after all, who am I? Go see your doctor and ask him or her every single question you can think of about your problem and any/all medications you can take. In the end, you may not decide to use a drug (and go with physical therapy or what-have-you) or perhaps supplement whatever therapy you choose with a particular medication, whether it be prescription or over-the-counter.

Nessa,

Buy Charles a How-to book on therapeutic massage. Seriously, a good massage does wonders for relaxing tight muscles. As for long term care - I'd recommend stretching and strengthening your back muscles - how about signing up for a yoga class? :star:

If you're looking for an over the counter solution what about Aleve? I can't remember the blend of drugs in it, but it certainly helps me quite a bit. I had major knee surgery five years ago and can get pretty gimpy with weather changes. If you don't mind topical solutions what about those heat patches? I've got pretty constant back pain at this point (stress makes my back knot up, immigration isn't helping that situation) and those heat patches can really help.
