Guys we are totally baffled - we have been asking advice but maybe in all the wrong places about what happens after I get my K1 Fiance Visa to enter the USA. So here are my questions - hopefully some of you can answer some of them:

Can I work as soon as I arrive in the USA and up until we get married?

Do I need to obtain a work permit?

If so, can this be done easily?

What is this sponsor document all about? I am worried because I don't know anything about it? If my fiancee does not have sufficient finances top support me - can her Father act as my sponsor for example?

Guys I just want to say thanks in advance for any answers.

Philip

You can only work if you receive a temporary employment authorization document when you enter. Currently only JFK regularly gives these. Otherwise, you need to apply for a work authorization document along with your other adjustment of status paperwork and plan on not working for minimum three months until you receive it.

Read through your consulate's requirements on a sponsor and which form they use - most use the I-134 but not consulates allow co sponsors. Your fiance needs to be your primary sponsor. Cosponsors must be US citizens or legal permanent residents.

Part of the problem with conflicting answers is that we tend to get so far ahead of ourselves with the process and we do not know exactly what we are asking about. We leave out important information because we simply do not know any better.

Since you have not filed yet, you have lots of time to get yourself self-educated. The best advice is to read, read, read all you can to establish a solid base of knowledge. Then the unanswered questions can more easily be asked and hopefully more appropriately answered.

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

In a nutshell. If you come in though JFK you will get a temporary EAD which expires with your visa. You still can not work until you get a social security number. That is usually about 4 weeks. So you could in theory work from about the 4th to about the 12th week and then not work legally until you get your permenant EAD which is usually about 90 days after the marriage and the Adjustment of status application.

You do not need a work permit. (unless you are a child and I don't think that is the case)

Your Father in law can act as the sponsor. anyone can with suffiecient income.

Technically you don't need a social security number in order to work. Employers most often ask for one, but it is not a requirement. You DO need a work permit. Initially if you have a temporary EAD from the point of entry, you can work until it expires. Otherwise, you must wait until your work authorization is approved. A father-in-law can only act as a sponsor if he is a USC or permanent resident. Not just anyone with sufficient income qualifies if they are not in the US for example.
