i haven't done it, but i googled it, and it said to report the birth to your embassy/consulate. Here is where you can select your nearest one: http://www.usembassy.gov/sca.html

I'd go to that embassy/consulate page and search for CRBA. It walks you through what you need.

I have just done it in Ethiopia. It was really simple, but I think it depends on your situation and the country you're in.

I emailed the embassy and they sent me a checklist, but you can find the info online too.

You have to show physical presence in the US for a certain amount of time, evidence of relationship and presence at the time of conception, and possibly evidence that you are the biological parent.

In our case my passport with exit/entry stamps and citizenship certificate, marriage & birth certificate of child, and my Ethiopian ID were all the consular officer was interested in.

I'd prepared a huge packet of relationship/physical presence evidence but she said "You've been in Ethiopia a while."

You have to schedule an appointment to drop off the application and then they give you an appointment for an interview to appear with the child (ours was the next day).

She just asked both of us questions from the documents we submitted - it was really casual in our case.

Hope you have the same luck!

Just want to add - check what becoming a US citizen means as far as your country's immigration goes.

Ethiopia does not recognize dual nationality so our son lost his Ethiopian citizenship and we had to get him an Ethiopian resident ID. They also charged us a fine for each day from his US passport issue date, which was not a nice surprise!
