Airline Policy - Need the facts!

I've been asked to escort an 11 yo daughter of a friend back to the US. The child already has K2 visa and I presume CFO. I'll verify all these details later. Right now I have 2 procedural questions.

First: RT ticket Columbus-Manila-Columbus can be purchased for $1100-1175 via JAL as primary carrier. One way Manila-Columbus on same return date is >$1600. Can I advise her mom and dad to purchase the RT and if the first leg Columbus-Manila is not used will the return leg Manila-Columbus still be valid. I'll be traveling on a RT ticket so should I advise the ticket counter that the child's first leg won't be used so the airline won't be looking for her at each departure gate? I've heard of return tickets just being discarded but never been exposed to the departure ticket not being used only the return leg. Just don't want to run into unforeseen issues at NAIA.

Second: When arriving in the US (Chicago, Dallas, NYC, don't know which) will I be able to accompany her through immigration even though I am returning US citizen and she will be going through one of the foreign arrival processing lines? No way would she be able to answer any questions that may arise from USCIS officer.

If the first leg is not used the return is automatically cancelled. Have you priced the other round trip ( Manila to US to Manila ) that way you are using the first leg.

If you do the round trip and don't use the return be sure to cancel it , someone was denied AOS for leaving even when they didn't because the airline didn't correct the return manifest.

check on bt-store.com for tickets. They are operated out of Asia and have good pricing on RT from USA and one-way out of the Philippines.

I don't expect that you will have issues going thru immigration. I would check and see if you need a parental consent letter or similar to accompany a minor.

No you can not buy a rt ticket and not use the first leg of the ticket. you can buy rt from manila to Columbus and not use the last leg of the ticket.

Just in the planning stages now. You're correct about being on same return flight. That's why I/we need to get everything pre-scheduled before commencing the actual purchase.

BTW good luck (I'm sure you won't need it) on 5/8. My asawa is doing hers on 5/5. IR-1 also. Have you already done SLEC? Any issues/advice that my asawa should be aware of? She's planning to do hers on 4/21-22.
