There's a reason why they refused to do that...

Don't forget, the car and tires are designed and tested by scientists, physicists, PhDs, etc....

They carefully calculate the tolerances, in this case, the lateral traction of the tires. They want certain "give" in the event of say, a T bone type collision, where the tires will slide vs. the side of the car caving in. or a lateral slide is preferred over a roll over....

for the same reasons, you really shouldn't put fatter tires on the car than what is recommended by the manufacturer. Especially in a smaller car that people love to soup up...

I know why the recommendation is there, but when 2 car guys are telling my husband it's stupid, he listens. I'll wait for no one to put these tires on and then buy new wheels for them and have the last laugh.
