What is people's fascination with telling another that they're "wrong"? It's amazing how negative the word sounds when applied to how people do or feel things.

Example:

  • Wrong, you do this.
  • You're wrong!
  • Wrong, this is the right way.
  • Wrong! It's all about that bass!

It's interesting how some people (like me for instance) cringe at the sound or look of the word. I think there are much better ways of writing about an error. Even saying "I'm sorry but" tends to soften the blow of "wrong."

"You are in error" sounds supremely better than "You are wrong." "Try this, it is the correct method" sure is wordy but the person hearing the words doesn't instantaneously become defensive like when you just say "you're wrong!" No matter where I read it on the internet, (lately on a minecraft website) I can picture the person who typed it as if they're standing over the other person trying to put them in their supposed place. Like some sort of bully who feels better about putting another person down.

Granted it's direct and often honest. Some people don't like to "beat around the bush" or they simply have decided that they don't care about another's feelings. Or maybe they feel that there should be zero emotional attachment to making a mistake because they do not feel one. Everyone who does must erroneously react to strong criticism and that's their issue, not the person who is giving the opinion or correction. But perhaps, not noting that people are individuals and expecting everyone to act and feel such as another does, is in itself the largest mistake we can make.

Tact is amazing. I likely do not use the amount of tact I have on the board all the time out of frustration, which really makes it less acceptable (at least to me) than if I never had any tact at all. It's the ones who lack any tact, or choose not to use what they have, that rub people the wrong way more often than not. I wonder if they see how someone else may take something, or is it just beyond their perception since they may not be offended? Or maybe they would be offended by someone speaking to them, as they have spoken to others, but don't realize they are acting in such a manner. Or simply, maybe they don't care how people, especially random people on an internet forum, perceive them. Or lastly, they purposely take on the persona of a jerk, because they enjoy pushing buttons for whatever reason they have to do so and are thus just a troll.

Anyhow, those are just my thoughts for the day. I'll mosey on back to my laundry. :)

(fyi fixed typo)
