It really should not surprise me that Americans have no idea about how their government systems work.

Heck I say my husband works for the FAA and people go "who?"

Federal Aviation Administration.

They say "oh he's an air traffic controller?"

No. He's an Airways Transportation System Specialist. Bascially he looks after the electronics not only in the tower but in places around Colorado because airplanes don't fly in straight lines.

"oh..." (not understanding) "yes they do."

No they don't... there are units all over the ground that send a signal to a plane to tell it where it is and where to go to get the next signal. That's why it feels like a plane makes some slight corrections while flying.

"OH!!" some semblance of understanding has now come over their otherwise glazed expression. "so it's important? that's cool." And I change the subject.

Granted most planes fly by GPS now and use the other systems as a secondary back up, but before it can come to that part of the conversation they're overwhelmed.

Yeah they use TACAN mostly in the military I think and VOR and DMEs etc in civilian. He gets training and updates on training in OKC.

They also do the localizer and glidescope and keep the equipment in the tower running properly.

Thankfully he's at a small airport and not a commercial one like DIA.

There is a local BBQ restaurant that we go to and I always order ribs. I used to order a 1/2 rack and then something else but I figured out I like the ribs part the best so now I just order a full rack of ribs (which is only $13.99.) They're melt in your mouth good. Quite simply the best ribs I've ever had in my life. Hubs complains about prices and portion size in Canada, but I find portion size far too big down here (when everyone is leaving your restaurant with a to-go bag, you serve too much!) but I do get the price thing complaint. You'd have to go to a steakhouse to get a rack of ribs in Alberta and it would cost you at least $25 and be not nearly as awesome!

Sometimes I try new things at restaurants but sometimes we go to a restaurant just because a particular meal there is good.

now that i've edited twice.. i'm going to get my glasses. LOL

THe BBQ place we go to a lot has yummy food too. I will vary sometimes get the french dip, but most times I get the sampler platter. It has ribs, beef brisket, and grilled/smoked keilbasa
