I've gotta agree with the "eh" and "aboot" stigma... I get it all the time.... I usually just try to beat them to the punch-line. If I get introducted as "Angela the Canadian", then I'll say

Hi,

Yes, I say Eh all the time ! Deal with it....

No, I don't say aboot

No, I don't have a pet beaver

No, I don't live in an igloo

The absolute worst for me is my boss is American... and whenever we get on Conference calls with anyone in Canada, he will start out the call with --- "I'll let Angela run this call since she speaks Canadian and everyone will understand her"... ####### !!!! I have to laugh because he's my boss... but I mean cmon !!! I speak Canadian.... Last I looked American and Canadian were the same English language !! Geeesssccchhhh..

But all in all, I know it's all in good fun... so I TRY not to let it get to me :)

Angela

When I was going to high school in Texas being Canadian became my entire identity. Can't say that I minded too much though :)

I was on yearbook staff and everyone there refered to me as "Canadian" or "the Canadian". They treated it more as a nickname than a stereotype though. Some of the other staff members even tried to send out the book copy with all my stories and photographs credited to "the Canadian". Amusing as it was, I am glad they didn't get away with it.

And amarceau, I too had a bit of an automated response when introduced the same way. It mostly consisted of spitting out the words "out, about, doubt, sorry" at top speed.

Right now, Brian's family and coworkers have taken to refering to me as a Mountie. I just don't get it ;)

I miss the trailer park boys!!!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

The first time I met my roommate, I noticed her accent and asked if she was from Minnesota. Nope, Toronto. To me, at least, it seems to be an Eastern thing.

The first time I met C.'s family, they were very curious as to whether I thought they all lived in igloos, because they thought that's what Americans thought of them.

THATS FUNNY ....NEXT TIME IN CHURCH ...TRY SAYING "EH-WOMAN" snicker...snicker..

I find that i say "eh" when others are saying it. I haven't heard myself say it it since I got here in the US (at least that's what I THINK), but in church yesterday the Pastor say "aaaah-men".. and I am following along going "eeeh-men".. i laughed at that one!! We even get "eh" in on our prayers! tee hee..

yah I get that too! wheres Canada!!! LOL

yeah .. i haven't even moved to Utah yet and already, most all of Clint's friends refer to me as "Canada".

"how's Canada doing?"

"when's Canada moving out here?"

my response being "as soon as Canada gets her damn consulate appointment eh?!!". arghh...
