Tell him to walk to Falls Church VA, I will buy the coffee

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I wish that we were living in CT right now :) New Hampshire apparently will not let my husband get a license until he has his green card in hand. And we live in a SMALL town, public transportation is unheard of. Today was -4 F (windchill - 30) so he wasn't about to leave the house to walk anywhere. He about broke my heart though tonight when he asked me to leave him a $5 to he could maybe walk to the Dunkin Donuts tomorrow to buy a coffee and see another human besides me :(

Oh my gosh he almost broke MY heart.. i hear his pain though.. my CDN $$ isn't good in this town :)

So he can't drive till he gets his greencard? HuH?

According to the New Hampshire DMV all he needs is his EAD, you just have to make that drive though I think is the issue. Looks like they won't do it at local offices. But if or when he gets his EAD card (usually a month or less after sending in the AOS) he should be fine to get a licence...

Here's what it says off of the N.H. DMV site:

"How can I obtain a NH driver license?

ALL FIRST TIME NH license applicants holding visas, permanent resident cards, refugees, asylees and employment authorizations cards (EAD), must apply at:

DOS DMV

Unfortunately it looks like NH has the same rule as Oklahoma -- K-1 visa holders don't count. :(

Not to be a downer, but it takes longer than that now. My greencard was approved before anything happened on my EAD, and while my AOS was approved really quickly, it was two months. According to the timelines here, it's between 90 and 110 days.

Hopefully one or the other is approved quickly so he can start driving again and not go stir crazy. Can he not drive with his Canadian license until then? I didn't get a WI license until I had my greencard (I figured if I wasn't a resident of the US, then I wasn't a resident of WI either).

I may have posted this somewhere else, but forgot to add this lovely little fact about his DL: during this process, his BC license expired. He was staying in the city and using public transport and didn't need it there. So, we thought, why pay money there when in a little while, he will be in New Hampshire and we will have to pay more money and get a license there. I had also gone to the DMV website that Warlord did and thought, okay he will have a visa, no problem. Yes, I know, BIG MISTAKE to assume anything. At some point (can't remember exactly when), I decided to telephone the DMV and finally got someone who dealt with non-citizen issues (after getting various answers from other staffers). They said that the K-1 is not a visa they accept for licenses so he needs his greencard. At this point, it was too late for him to get his BC one renewed. Trust me, we are both KICKING ourselves now.

One of the reasons why his lack of license SUCKS so much is that we both are relatively new to the area. I moved here in the summertime. We have been so consumed with the visa process, me starting my new job (reason for the move) and fixing up our house, that we have not made many friends. If we were still in GA, he would have plenty of buddies to hang out with. On the plus side though, we are getting together Saturday with 2 new friends ... so he gets to have human contact besides me.

Does he have a canadian Driver license ? I know here in Illinois I can drive 90 days with my Can DL before changing it...which leaves me enough time to get married and SSN. I dont know about N-H though...

Hehehe!!! I'm sure he would love that :)

BTW, I used to work in Falls Church on Leesburg Pike :)

We reside off of Lee Highway. There is a Dunkins close by!! I will buy, that is if he is not a Leafs fan!!

Mr and Mrs need to sign the check then you sign under it.

Just like you would do if you were cashing a check .........um cheque....against your own account :)

Thanks again for this advise CutienPurg.. It worked!!! I got the credit in my bank account today for the cheques!! Awesome!! I was really unsure if it would work.

Cheque was made out to Mr & Mrs. Emancipation..

We signed our names underneth, then I signed my maiden name under the 2 names, and then I threw it in an envelope and sent it to my CDN account.. Cheers!

UGH.. I just got a card from the DMV stating that my DOB is incorrect on my DL.. I'm thinking huh? They scrutanized my paperwork and went over it with a fine tooth comb.. how can that be?

I have 10 days to report to the "loverly" DMV with my licence, where they will promptly dispose of this one, and issue a new one.

I thought - they must have inverted my month-date (you know how CDN and US have different formats ) day-month-year vs. month-day-year. But nope.. it's a date 3 days past my actual birthday!

The funny part was when I went to Social security the lady said my birthday was wrong on my SSN card as well.. 1 day past my actual birthday on that one.. JUST my luck :)

So my latest Saga in the AOS process..... is NO ISSUES TO REPORT!! ha ha!! I am not going to say what I want to say cause it will invariably jinxx me and I'll get what I'm about to say I didn't get immediately following!! HA HA!

But I did have a very painless Biometrics Appt. today!! Made it to Hartford okay (hubby had to work today), and when I got there the guard was SHOCKED that I had read the Appointment letter and knew to hand him my letter of notice and my ID (and had left the cell phone and all electronic equipment in the car). He was OVERLY nice from that point on cause he was so impressed. After I got in the door I heard him say (clearly irritated "no you'll have to leave your cell phone out on the street - cause it's not coming in here!!). I had a one pager to fill out - SSN#, Height, Weight, Hair & Eye Color, all alias' used, reciept #'s for all USCIS paperwork, etc. etc., and then brought all that back to the Receptionist. I immediately got into the fingerprinting section... where this guy.. holy.. this is going to sound crass.. but it was like a mamogram for my fingers. He was squeezing so tight it was hurting by the end.. geepers.. He had a lot of problems getting my fingerprint for my left hand ring finger. Anyway 15 min later I was out of there after filling out (of all things) a SURVEY card!! That's nutters!!

They did check my hands for cuts etc., but no one asked me if I had hand lotion on though.. I had seen that in a posting somewhere else, but they never asked or checked for it that I know of. :)

So today - Paperwork VICTORY!!! :) Ha ha!! I'm kinda stunned here, like really numb thinking about all the things that went RIGHT this past week!!

1. We got our AOS paperwork transferred to CSC - HOLY DINAH!

2. We found an amazing deal for CT - 1500$ square feet (HEATED) for the price we are paying for a modest (and I mean MODEST) studio! We applied for the Lease - and VOILA! We were accepted!

3. Today I recieved 2 MONTHS of cards from EI!! I had a call last week from Denise asking me if I had applied for my Permant Residency, and to fax her copies of my NOA's on both the EAD document and the AOS. She told me that I was "approved", but I was so shocked that I didn't have the guts to ask her if that was before I recieved my AOS or after only. But the cards arrived today, and they are now safe in the mail box outside our small town postal office.

It's all good in paperwork land tonite... I am with the man I love, and all is well !!
