Hey guys,

Instead of starting new posts for each of the question I have in my head, I thought it might be a better idea that I just posted all my questions at once! So here I come!

DS-156

1. No. 14 "National Identification Number", what is it exactly? How can I find out whether I have it or not?

2.There is a part asking my "present occupation", so if after I filled in my job and everything, then I mailed the form to the consulate, all of a sudden for some reason I was fired or I quited my job, does it change anything? I mean I have filled in my "present"job which isn't now. So what if I put "unemployed"?

3. No. 22 "When do you intend to arrive in the US?" Well, I don't have he exact date yet, what should I put there then?

4. No. 28 "Who will pay for your trip?", If I put "myself" there, if later on it was my parents or whoever else, does it matter at all?

5. No. 32 "Do you intend to work in the US?", Well I do plan to get a job there when I am allowed to, so should I put yes"? "But then what should I write?

6. No. 34 "Names and relationships of persons travelling with you", well Sam does plan to come over in May to pick me up so we could go back to the usa together, but what if eventually it couldn't happen? If I put his name on this part, does it really matter if later on no one's travelling with me?

Thank you guys, for your kind attention and help, wish you the best on your visa journey.

At least two of the questions you asked are on the example form (22 and 32) where it seems your situation is exactly the same as the example. So I'm not sure why that wasn't clear to you when you read the examples.

The other ones are pretty much common sense. Of course circumstances can change - so answer the question as truthfully as possible at this moment in time.

1, National ID number, If your country has a mandatory ID card for all citizens, the number will be on that card, They do in mainland China, I am not sure about Hong Kong though.

2, you put what ever your job status on the form it makes no difference.

3, No 22 Write 'when visa is granted'

4, No 28 MYSELF

5, No 32, Yes and WITH WORK AUTHORIZATION, EMPLOYER UNKNOWN

6, No 34, NONE unless a relative like son or daughter is traveling with you.

Also the DS-156 is recommended to do the online electronic one and print it out 2 times, the online form generates a unique bar code, that contains all the Data that you entered into the form, the consular officer can scan the code and get the information correctly entered into the system. Many consulates are now requiring the online version even though they sent a paper one in the packet.

On Question 28 does it matter who is paying for the trip "Myself or My fiance"? Or do you recommending "Myself" for question 28 for some reasons?

Again, everything you need is here on this site if you'll just take the time to look.

It is being very optimistic to think that "everything you need" is on that site. The example form DS-156 on that page contains several items which cannot be filled in on the mandatory on-line form which generates the barcode.

Take question 22, "When do you intend to arrive in the U.S.?" The example form says "when visa is granted". The actual form will only accept the entry of a date, but not text. Telephone numbers in standard international practice begin with a plus sign, but the on-line form will not accept a plus sign. The on-line form will not accept N/A because it does not accept a slash. Many addresses, especially foreign addresses contain commas, but the form will not accept a comma in an address. The example form contains several commas in addresses.

So anyone who studies the sample forms is still going to have questions and problems.

A few posters are reading the minds of the form authors and stating that question 34 only applies to immigrants. Just reading the question in a straightforward way (names and relationships of persons traveling with you) there is no reason why you could not write the name of your sponsoring fiancé here. In fact, if he is indeed traveling with you and if he is a person, then the question specifically asks for his name. It is just one more indication of a genuine relationship.
