Can we do an Egyptian arabic word thread? I'm so unmotivated to learn but I really really really have to start asap. I don't know what's wrong with me lately.

Ok so I figured it needs to be egyptian since the others are so different. :)

My word for today is Shukran, which is thank-you. (wicked easy since I know it already. lol.)

Shukran for continuing this thread :luv:

hmmmmm.....Usama says "mashy" when he refers to stuffed grapeleaves. When he says "ok" he says it more like "mesh".

See this is why I get so confuzzled and then I quit trying to study it. I really like math much better 'cause 1 + 1 ALWAYS = 2!

Also these words are not egyptian, they are used by all arabs. I'm sure there are some words that are exclusive to the egyptian dialect but I don't know any off the top of my head. I'm sure Salwa, Chococat, and Nouna would know.

Ok those two sound the same when I say them. I think it's my Boston accent. the "ah" and "a" are the same for me.

How come when he says "mashi", meaning ok, it sounds like "mesh"? And he usually says it like, "tie, mesh". He says that almost every other sentence when he's on the phone, "tie, mesh....tie, mesh.....tie, mesh"

LOL that word is commonly used in Jordan too, I hear alot Iraqi's use it as well. I think pronunciation is probebly the biggest difference.

that makes sense since he is normally talking to his sisters when he says that. lol. they're probably telling him what to pick up at the market or not to forget to put his dirty socks in the laundry

so maybe it's the dialect i'm thinking of 'cause when we went to a restaurant run by an iraqi he had a hard time understanding what he was saying.

Well the Iraqi dialect in particular is very harsh. There are also many words that are exclusive to their dialect. We have many iraqi friends and it took me a long time before I could understand them without a translator.

Yeah I remember once my cousin from Jordan went to Sharm il Sheikh and they were talking to an Egyptian police officer asking him some questions. He said something and she answered him "la2 ya zalameh" and he got very serious and quiet. I guess her brother in law who was with her at the time knew that its a rude thing to address an egyptian man "ya zalameh" but its so common to say that in Jordan and its not considered disrespectful there.
