Well, going to Canada I've only flown out of IAH (Houston) and MSP (Minneapolis/St. Paul), and I've never gone through Canadian Customs & Immigration in the United States. Only once I've reached Canada do I go through C&I, which really sucks for me, since there's always the possibility that Canada won't allow me entry into the country, and then I'm screwed. Coming back home to the U.S., I've always gone through American C&I pre-clearance in Canada.

Do ALL U.S. airports operate this way? I don't know. I have a feeling, however, that you only through Canadian C&I in Canada, and that there's no pre-clearance in the U.S. for you. It'd be nice if there was though, I'd tell you that much. ;)

I suppose you'd sit in the terminal for as long as necessary until your new flight arrived to take you home. Honestly, I don't know. I sincerely hope I never find out either.

I wonder what happens if you can't book a flight home that day/night, and you're stuck there. What do the do? Lock you up or something?

I was almost denied entry into Canada the last time I went. I did nothing wrong either -- I told the truth about my situation, circumstances, relationship, and only spoke when spoken to (i.e. I didn't say more than I needed to at the time). However, I was still sent to secondary since the officer I met with sort of "freaked out" when he heard about my relationship status to a Canadian citizen. Fortunately, after I relayed practically my entire life story, I was let through and allowed into the country. But it was close!

to answer your question...being a travel agent...

no US Airport has Canadian Customs and immigration!

We in Canada have US customs and Immigration in the Major Canadian Airports

strange thing...but its a convenience for us travelling to the US to get it over with!

so...if you are denied entry/boarding due to a documenation problem...typically you are

out your ticket cost if its a non refundable ticket. This has happened to some of

my clients if they have some kind of criminal record.

Americans or other nationalities arriving into Canada who don't pass question and

answer test at the Canadian Customs desk will be turned around and sent back

on the next flight.

I was thinking about this, most if not all the Airports here in Canada have pre clearance US Customs. Does Canada have that in any US Airports?

Are you worried about Mel coming for a visit? My husband came for a visit last month and he brought all the K3 paperwork with him showing that I'm the one immigrating to the US, and not the other way around as well as his own personal documents like letter from his employer with date expected back at work and his car papers (he got a new car in November).

At the POE in Toronto (YYZ airport), he told them he was visiting his wife, they asked why I was here and he said because I live here and I'm a Canadian citizen. Then they let him through, no further questions. :)

Wow! I wish Canadian Customs & Immigration were that nice when I went through... They practically had a coronary when I told them I was visiting my fiancee (they didn't ask why she was there in Canada, or I would've told them the same thing you said) and chaos ensued. I'm hoping I won't have that sort of trouble when I go back up again. :(

Just make sure you bring all the USCIS paperwork with you, letter from your employer, anything that shows your ties to the U.S. Be prepared and be confident. :)

Now, imagine how I felt when I went through U.S. preclearance last week (me, as the foreign spouse) and said, "Visiting my husband"... They asked lots of questions that pretty much only someone going through this insane process would know and were nice and I was let through without having to go to secondary. I offered to show them my paperwork, but they said it wasn't necessary. :)

I never have had a problem coming into the USA, BUT coming back to Canada I get hassled like I am some kind of criminal!! Same for my wife (USA citizen) coming back to the USA. The USA POE dude ignores me and hassles her, lol I don't imagine it's fun to be sitting there all day looking at passports and dealing with people in a rush! Not my cup of tea.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

No, there's a reason of numbers here.

Lots of US airports service flights to/from Canada (largest number of course are to Pearson/Pigtown) where only 9 airports in Canada service US.

Hi all,

I (USC) was questioned when at Toronto Pearson Airport when I traveled to visit my husband (Canadian) 2 weekends ago. They asked me the reason for my visit, and I told them I was there to visit my husband. Then they sent me to the back to be furthered questioned. They didn't like how I travel frequently to Toronto, and asked how can a social worker like me with such low pay afford to travel to visit my husband... =X once I presented my return ticket, they were okay. Instead of stamping the usual entry stamp on my passport, they gave me a "visa" which is valid for travel to Canada for 6 months.

Does that mean that I'll have trouble visiting him after 6 months?

As of now, I have not applied for permenant residency in Canada.

Any tips of how to get through Canadian customs?

Thanks!

Wow. I never realized that so many coming to Canada to visit their SO's go through such an ordeal as well.

Karina- I would phone Canada Customs and talk to someone in charge and ask them.

Call BIS within Canada (1-800-461-9999)

Call BIS from outside of Canada (long-distance charges apply):

(204) 983-3500 or
