If my fiance spent time in the US on a student visa will she need a police certficate from here? she was in the states for about 2 years attendign college.

Also, she is from Latvia, but resides in the UK. does a police certificate need to be obtained from both places? If so, how does one go about obtaining one? can it be done over the phone?

The way I understand it, The benificiary will need official statements from the National or Regional Police Department from each place she lived since she was 16. So I would think your answer would be yes, she needs the documents. I found information online for obtaining one in Canada. If you can't find it online, I'm sure calling those organizations will help you find out how to get the documents. Sometimes there may be a fee, different countries handle these requests differently.

Good Luck!

Here's the link to the form online for the UK police certificate (form 3019B). She'll have to fill it out and mail it in with the fee and proof of identity.

http://www.met.police.uk/dataprotection/forms.htm

Here's what's on the UK embassy's website about Police certificate requirements. Perhaps it will help.

http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/iv/docs169.html

Police certificates are required for each visa application aged 16 years or older. A separate certificate is required from the police of each country in which the applicant has lived for twelve months or more after the age of 16; the period is six months if country of birth or current nationality. This certificate must state cover the entire period of the applicant's residence in that area or country and state what the appropriate police authorities records show concerning each applicant including all arrests, the reason for the arrest(s), and the disposition of each case of which there is a record. Important Notice: If you are 16 years of age or over and were born in the United Kingdom or the UK is your current nationality you will require a police certificate to cover your period of residence of six months or more since reaching the age of sixteen. The period is twelve months for all other nationalities.

Thanks for your responses. So now I know that she will need police certificates from US (was there for more than 12 months) and from latvia (home country, there for 6 or more months). does anyone have experience getting police certificates from these countries (US and Latvia)? Thanks for the UK info Tracy...
