ROME (AFP) - Islam does not require women to wear veils, Queen Rania al-Abdullah of Jordan has said in an interview, calling on Muslim moderates to "make their voices be heard."

"Islam neither requires one to be practising, nor to dress in one way or another," the stylish 36-year-old queen told the Italian daily Corriere della Sera during a visit to Rome on Friday.

"So imposing the veil on a woman is contrary to the principles of Islam," said Queen Rania, who is in Rome for the launch of a Group of Seven (G7) programme to develop vaccines against diseases that are endemic in poor countries.

"Unfortunately, after all the suspicion weighing on Islam, many people have begun to consider the veil as a political problem, but this is not the case," she told Corriere. "Wearing the veil is a free personal choice."

Queen Rania urged "all moderates to stand up and let their voices be heard."

She added: "Many people are frustrated in the Arab world. Many give in to the anger because they are accused of violence. But instead we should get up, explain who we are and what we believe in.

"Over the last three years, most victims of terrorism have been Muslim. So there's not a war between Muslims and non-Muslims, but between extremists and moderates of all the religions," the queen said.

"What is important is not to live in fear. The most dangerous (thing to do) is to give up and lose hope. The main enemy is not terrorism or extremism, but ignorance," she said.

she has a voice of reason... and maybe with her stepping up and speaking out, other muslims will be stregthened enough to feel they can too... the world needs to hear the difference between muslim and extremist muslim... it will conquer a lot of fear in those who dont know that there is a difference right now...

pronouncements on islam need to come from mainstream religious scholars, not from members of a royal family that many view as illegitimate and/or corrupt.

They have but the press just doesn't seem to care about publicizing these pronouncements.

The royal family better hope the Islamofascists never take over in Jordan. They're gonna stone Queen Rania for this if they can.

This is not the first time the Royal family has spoken out regarding Islamic traditions. Actually I can't remember one queen that did wear a veil. I know Queen Alia didn't wear one. The Royal family is very loved in and highly supported in Jordan. There are groups in the Parliment that have been trying for years to gain more ground but they have never been able too. The Royal family doesn't take any sh#t.

When Zarqawi died, a place of mourning was opened by his family in Zarka, Jordan. 4 parliment members went to pay respects to Zarqawi's family, they were arrested and removed from the Parliment. There are alot of things that certain Islamist groups don't like about the Royal Family and this is not just now but for a long time. Islamofaciscts for lack of a better word, will never take over Jordan. The Jordanian people won't stand for it, they are very patriotic and they love the royal family and the way of life there.
