Hello All,

I have good news, after a 10 month application process my Tanya had her interview and was approved for her K-1... but they said that there would be a delay for some extra processing but wouldn't tell her what it was for and said it should take around 5 weeks instead of the 1-5 days that it normally takes for them to send her the visa. Does anyone have any ideas why this may have happened? She asked if it was because of our jobs, I'm an officer in the U.S. Navy and she works for the Russian Customs service, but they said that didn't have anything to do with it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

John

Congratulations on your approval! Maybe you can inquire from the embassy and find out what the delay is. If they said five weeks, it could be ready much sooner than that.

I don't have any idea what the additional delay could be either, but it would be a good idea for you to write an e-mail to the Embassy in Moscow. In my experience they have always been prompt at responding (usually within two business days.) Also do you have the tracking number from the DHL prepaid envelope that she had to give them at the interview? It's good to check that online to see if the shipment (with visa) has left the Embassy.

Hey John,

Well off the record our folk in Moscow are most likely having to deal with a somewhat sensitive political situation. You see, anyone who works for the Russian government and who tries to leave and go abroad will face some difficulty. It is my belief that this phenomenon is what you and your fiance are experiencing. It's not our embassy/government, it's theirs. Of course, noone will admit to anything, including our people and especially not theirs. So writing emails, making verbal inquiries, blah blah blah will do nothing. You'll just have to wait it out I'm afraid. And I don't think you'll ever know what they did, but after she arrives on US soil, it won't matter. ;)

I have experience in this area because I've been to the FSU 12 times now and had a relationship with an officer in the Ukranian government. She would tell me about how any woman in her position (or in any of the other FSU republics' governments) would be scrutinized if she tried to leave the country. Unfortunately she wouldn't ever say why, so I can't comment further.

Hope this helps, but probably not.

Congratulations all the same!

Best,

Jerry

Paranoia in its highest form.

Contact the consulate and inquire about the delay.

Well I figured I'd come here to give an update. It's been a while. We're now at 10 weeks past the interview and still no visa :( We've called the Embassy but after waiting for 15 mins in their super expensive phone system, they checked Tanya's case number and said that she didn't pay for her first phone call in time and hung up. She did pay as soon as she got the bill. So I've been in contact with my legal office who is dealing with the U.S. Embassy in Japan to see if they can get any info from the Embassy in Moscow and I also have contacted my Congressman and he's looking into things for this too. Just as long as she has it by the beginning of July I'll be happy. Right now we're planning on a 14 July wedding.

JamesT, Unfortunately there is no tracking number on the DHL receipt that Tanya got when she paid for her envelope :( I'm still trying to find out what to do about that as well. Hopefully I'll have good news on this soon.

John thanks for the update and it sounds like normal AP and she is in some type of security checks for her name, travel, job, etc. Hopefully, they will tell you this much soon or you will be cleared. Did they give her a 221g or other form at the time of her interview? Once your case goes into AP you will not be given much information other than they are working on the case and will contact the petitioner once they are ready to proceed.

Good luck.

Mary
