Hello guys,

I`ve checked some old topics about the certified copy of the marriage certificate and I still dont know exactly what to do...

I got married at the NYC City Hall and I received one Marriage Certificate thats says "Certified this date at the City Clerk`s Office", so should I send this original (or ask for another original) to USCIS or just a regular copy of this document?

And thanks to all members from VJ, this is a really great help during all immigration process.

Oh thats great deeder! Im concerned about it cause I saw that some people received RFEs because they did not send the certified copy...but I was wondering if they did not send the original or if they sent copies of those souvenirs certificates.

We ordered extra copies of the certified certificate. Just to be sure we sent in the certified version and aos sailed through. I would order extra certified copies you will need them in the future.

Oh, this might be bad...it takes 8 weeks for NY Marriage Bureau to mail it (we live in Nebraska, so low chances to get it in person). Maybe I should send USCIS the one I have and wait for the copies to keep.

I wouldn't recommend that. Always keep your original. Send a good, legible copy and at the same time, send off for several certified copies from NY. There is no requirement to send a certified copy so there is a good chance it won't matter. It is just a recommendation that you do. If you do receive an RFE for a certified copy, they will already be in process and possibly on their way to you. This way you kill 2 birds with one stone and you will need certified copies in the future anyway. Good Luck.

You only need a regular photocopy of your marriage certificate. It states a copy in the I-485 instructions.

I see people mention RFEs for not having an original, but I still have not seen one of those. If someone did get an RFE for it, then I believe it probably was because they sent the wrong document. Some people mistakenly send the souvenir copy, and not the one that has the stamp/seal and is signed by the county clerk.
