He need to Travel with the expire creen card and the i797 that they Send You after You submit your form. This is the letter with the one year extension. If he dont have the letter they not Going to let You out or in

Oh, they will let you out. No problem. But they won't let you back in without the extension letter and expired green card or a stamped passport.

Could you give us some dates? When are you leaving? When does the card expire? We will have a better idea of when you are likely to receive the extension letter. For example, if you mailed the application and the card expires next week, DO NOT leave the country!

I send the package yesterday and his card expires on 4/18/15 and we plan to travel 8-15-15

My husband creen card already expire last October 26 of 2013. When we (husband, Baby and me) go vacation January 1 2014 at the airport the customer service at the counter of jet blue told us this card is expire You (husband) can not Travel, them My husband give to him his extensión letter, he read, and said ok, now You Guys can go, he print our tickets and we go to board the fligth to DR

And the same thing happens to him last feb 27, he go to Dom. Rep. And they ask him at counter for the letter, they told him, because your card is 4 month expire, every time You go or coming back, you need to show passport, expire card and the letter
