If it's implied, then it's not inherent. Those are opposite states. I would agree that it is implied in many cases, but mostly that comes from past behavior. It's not necessarily the behavior of the group, as much as what we are reading into it.

White pride brings with it questions of what it means to be white, something that whites (at least in Europe and the USA) have never had to consider since they defined the world for people of other races - hence the feeling that these groups need to establish their own identities.

Theoretically there is nothing wrong with that. Practically of course there is because the only whites who view the world in this way are extremists - people who see minorities as their competition in the social pecking order.

Of course white pride or black pride or whatever is not a celebration of skin color, but and event which marks the accomplishments of a group of people. Fifty years ago in America minority groups were treated as second class citizens. A hundred and fifty years ago, women were treated as second class citizens.

Maybe a few hundred years from now, it won't make sense, but it hasn't been that long and I don't see an issue with a group celebrating the accomplishments that have been made and also pointing out that there is still more to do. It's also another reason why we're more likely to see and accept minority groups holding these events, and also why, realistically, I would be a bit skeptical of a white pride event.

I'd really like to see a white person explain what it means to be white and how often they think about themselves in terms of race. Personally I'm not convinced anyone can.

White people don't do that, usually, unless the belong to the KKK or some neo-Nazi organization, or paramilitary column. Furthermore, for whites, race is not, nor has it ever been an issue. What you see here, are those who fancy themselves white, but in reality aren't, who tend to overdo on their imaginary whiteness. They fight the white cause as if it were theirs.

That simply does not justify the behavior he was subjected to by any means.

Nowhere did I say it justified it. I was simply explaining that it was not necessarily attributable to racism and I say this as someone who grew up in a community where there were bombs and bullets involved when we got a water treatment plant and that counted as too much 'gentrification' to certain people in the community who were afraid of their property taxes going up. I grew up in an area where gentrification was such a demonized thing that it wasn't unusual to come home from school and pass the bomb squad with the bomb robot going at the post office or the Reeve's office on the school bus or for people to be mailed bullets with death threats. And yet it was a 99.9% white community (I can think of three mixed race people in the village and surrounding area and they were either children or in favour of the water treatment plant).

The fear of gentrification is a valid fear that leads people to do absolutely psychotic, overreacting things, but it doesn't mean racism. That was literally the entire point of my post and I'm sorry if that got missed. It's just as likely that someone flipping houses and doing renos of that nature who was black would have received the same treatment from the black neighbours. It's just as likely that he would have received that same treatment from poor white folks and I know this because I lived it.

They are not acting as individuals, they are members of one group (a fraternity) and enrolled at another institution ( a university) that have codes of conduct. Singing songs about hanging someone from a tree constitutes hate speech. If they cannot adhere to the code of conduct that they agreed to, they deserve to get booted out.

What still stands true is that racism, hatred and bigotry don't belong in any syllabus, nor should it be tolerated in academia.
