Nope I don't hit things, 2 reasons why.

1. I don't drive if at all possible.

ah....that's easy. I'll give you directions.......

Exit your driveway, make a right.

Drive until you smell manure, that's where hillbilly works......

Make a left, drive until you smell burning garbage, that's the dump.....

Make a right and drive till you smell bacon.....that's the cops hanging out at the donut shop at the entrance of the mall.....

learning a new language as an adult is a very different thing to learning it as a child (even as a secondary language). i don't think it's useful to take a few years off post-graduation, move to a foreign country, and pick up a new language in the hopes of being proficient enough to compete against native speakers in their home country. sounds like a chinese tourism/education scam that targets kids who don't know what to do with their lives and want to just extend their school years before having to face the real world.

sometimes, at least in seattle (since that's all i'm familiar with), knowing a second language that is spoken by the rapidly growing at-risk immigrant community can put you ahead of another similarly qualified candidate. it did in my case, at least. true, we could call in a translator - but we would not be able to deliver services with the same immediacy than if we had a staff member with the language proficiency to communicate with a client on the spot. also, translators gotta be paid whereas staff members are already on payroll. many job ads list preferences for bi-lingual staff (especially vietnamese and arabic).

but would i advise someone to take a second language solely in the hopes it will make them more competitive in the job market later in life? um...no. too difficult to predict if the language will still be relevant by the time the kid enters the workforce. maybe for other reasons - i think i read somewhere that learning a second language actually can improve your primary language. not sure how that works, but if anyone is interested, i'm sure the research is floating around the internet somewhere.

and after that essay...

i'm going to bed. loooong day.

Flying to Seattle on 6 May 2014!
