Yeah, I know. But one should always aim high;)

Schools should inspire...

The student should inspire!

When the school inspires, the student is nothing but a recorder.

When the student inspires, the school is the recorder. The recorder of the students achievements.

The student makes the school. Not the other way around.

And if you guys come over to visit.....

You will see, that no classroom, no class, can teach you about culture. It's something that you have to experience.

I'll show you that'll give you "culture shock". And I don't care how much you learned about it before.

If the kid is a genius, sure. But for the average kid, I think environment is important. That is why people spend great amounts on private education.

Aren't you bilingual, Steve? You must admit that you think in a different way, when speaking English, than you do when using Cantonese?

The things I say in English, I could never directly translate and say in Japanese, as the mind-set/culture is so different, and would sound odd.

Yeah. Culture has to be experienced. However lessons learnt in class can be a stepping stone.

Talking of culture shock, that Jewpanese dish sure was-lol.

When I went to school, in the 1800s, it was compulsory to learn French. At ages 14 we had options of Latin, Ancient Greek , German , Russian and Spanish.

I think one language, should be compulsory , in order to give a rounded education.

I do think history is important -lol.

I also think the discipline of learning a language is important, by the same token.

For me, I started French in 2nd grade and went through 12th and into college. Then, Latin in maybe 8th grade or so, followed by Spanish in high school and a year of German. I didn't take a lunch in HS, the lunchroom is like a nightmare for someone with social anxiety, so I had extra time.

Just because you like languages though, doesn't mean your kid does. I love riding horses, but my kid is more meh.

Individual. It's a lovely word.

That's exactly what I mean, Whadahel do we need to offer language for? In my company, I have 8 languages covered. 10 if you count the ones that are not so fluent. Yet, do you think any of those people learned it in school? (answer is no). We don't need anymore linguists.

And, that's what I mean. You think you can learn about the haisids by taking hebrew? I mingle with them weekly.

You think you can learn about the CCP by taking Mandarin, or reading Wikipedia? No, you can't. You have to break bread with them.

And, why do you think I'm armed all the time? It's called "Da ghetto" I get into it. Ido work in it. I know it. And it's nothing you can learn from a classroom or a book.

You think Harvard just happened along and became famous because "it was a good school"? No, The students past, made it what it is. MIT, Cal Tech. Ivy leagues, hidden Ivies, all because of the students. Not the school.

I only know about American HS dining rooms from movies- look a nightmare ;)

Over here in Japan, because space is limited, public schools don't have dining rooms or changing rooms. The kids eat lunch, and change for sports in the same room as they study-stinks to high heaven!!

And where does that French get you now? So you know how to ask for the bathroom in France?

Oh, Steve. You are a Chinese John Wayne, lol!

The kids don't have to become linguists, but I think having to learn a language for a few years, whilst young, is great intellectual stimulation.

Le toilet, silver plate?

(That's French, Steve)

It's just the nature of what I do.

you know what is great intellectual stimulation? Expose them to diversity. That's all you have to do. And if they want to learn about it, let them go nuts.

But not everyone lives in da ghetto.

What about some kid who lives in some tiny town, who isn't a science whizz? Maybe learning a foreign language will inspire him/her to buy a ticket to a foreign land...

I am surprise that people don't cook rice from scratch.

i learnt how, the Justin Wilson way.

at age 11.

these ricecookers are easy, also.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

then all ya gotta do is take him on local trips. America is a melting pot. Not like Iceland. They can see a thousand cultures right here in the land, from coast to coast.

he can be inspired, and go off on his own.

Languages should be available but optional.

bah .

I moved into an area as a kid,

where it was trilingual - english, spanish and czech. all taught in high school also.

but i came in at 7th grade. and only knew english. The spanish kids were talking czech to the czech kids, and the czech kids talking spanish to the spanish kids.

i soaked it all up within a year, but it was mean when a new teacher from 'somewhere else' showed up
