Btw.....Science, history, and social studies, are not a part of the 3 Rs.

In fact, the only thing I objected to, is language.

What foreign language did your daughter learn? (In school)

Learning a foreign language is important IMO . It involves learning about another culture (watching films, reading books, eating different foods) .

My daughter? She goes to a Japanese school. It is compulsory to learn English, so the classes are a breeze for her;)

I know. I was just saying that if you want to strip education to vocational usefulness , you might as well strip it down to reading, 'riting, and 'rithmatic.

History doesn't get you a job either.

History won't get you a job. It'll get you understanding. Comparative standards to go by . Case law is history, right? How about in the world of finance, does history speak? Prevention of wars?

Just so you know around here foreign language does not mean learn about the culture, nothing to do with it. It's just mesmerizing

Languages should be available but optional.

When I went to school, in the 1800s, it was compulsory to learn French. At ages 14 we had options of Latin, Ancient Greek , German , Russian and Spanish.

I think one language, should be compulsory , in order to give a rounded education.

History won't get you a job. It'll get you understanding. Comparative standards to go by . Case law is history, right? How about in the world of finance, does history speak? Prevention of wars?

I do think history is important -lol.

I also think the discipline of learning a language is important, by the same token.

But if a child is given the chance to learn a foreign language, if they have any initiative and flair for the language, they will learn about the culture. Translating a novel etc.

I mean that is like saying history is just memorising dates, and geography, maps.

That only works for about 3 out of a 100 kids the rest just want to get the heck out of the class.

And yes for history it's about the same.

In many places in Canada it is compulsory to learn a second language (depending on where you are depends on which languages are available) up to a certain point, then it becomes optional, but you must keep taking it, as an option, if you wish to attend university, even for something that doesn't require having a second language. I would have taken latin, had it been available, because it would have helped me learn latin names for things.

However, it was social studies that taught me culture, not language. Languages was simply that, learning a language. Social studies teaches history and cultures. Right now my daughter is learning about the Iroquois nation because she is learning about democracy. Perhaps in that way the Canadian and US system is different than the UK.

My point, the US don't need linguists. Every marklan swinging dickk speaks some other language already.

That is how it was for my kids also. It's just not the way it works where we are now.

Yeah, I know. But one should always aim high;)

Schools should inspire...

Oh I completely agree, but for here the kids start in grade 5 saying they don't need to learn that they are just going to have babies and get welfare. That is what they learn here :(

And when I say here I mean where I am not all over.

I didn't have social studies. We learnt geography and history as two separate topics.
