I found out recently that our school district decided to stop foreign language classes this year and will only do ASL. Ummm, really? Not that ASL isn't important, but so are other languages too.

That's good! Whadahel does my kid need Italian for? The hood is full of guineas...

Remember in the 80s (no you don't) when the fad was "oh we need to learn Japanese"? Well, now, do we need to speak Japanese now? No, we don't.

Now it's "oh we need to learn mandarin. No we don't.

If a kid wants to learn another language, they can do it on their own.

I'd rather spend that time teaching science, history, math, SOCIAL STUDIES!

Hell, who needs history?

Just stick with the 3Rs, Steve??

What a bland life you want for your children.

Personally, I think Latin should be compulsory , but hey ho.

Sign the kiddies up for some CPA course.

Not sure about the north but here, you're better off learning Spanish than any other second language. In Canada becoming bilingual is beneficial for government jobs. Really unless you're naturally able to learn many languages (many aren't) then it's not important to push them on kids. I would have rather spent time in high school learning more science or art than all time I had to spend on a second language just to get into university.

There aren't that many exclusively Spanish speaking people up here, but there are some. Either way, I think it is an important language to learn or at least a romance language just to get the general format down.

I was planning on signing up my daughter for online Spanish class, I think they start in about 3rd grade because had she been back in CT, they start Spanish in Kindergarten.... and if we were to ever move back, I don't want her too far behind. Depending on how she's progressing else than that, she's also got the Danish national curriculum courses starting in 2nd grade. This way, she'll at least have the option of keeping Danish citizenship.

The school said the problem was for at least a decade they've been looking for a reliable foreign language teacher, specifically Spanish because you can't change languages all the time, and they ended up using basically like a distance learning class after the last one left. It wasn't working out well.

They found an ASL teacher in town and for such a small town there are a few deaf residents, so I guess it works....

The USA don't need Spanish, or any, language speakers. Not do we need nudity majors. They're all over the place.

We need engineers, doctors, technicians, rocket scientists.

I'm not saying that art, language should not be learned. I'm saying they can be independent studies.

Like I always said, my company should have a phone system that when it picks up, it says "para espanol, press 2" and when you press 2, it ###### hangs up.

Btw, I use history, everyday of my life.....

Remembering it isn't the point. It's an intellectual exercise . Edited by Jacque67

Btw.....Science, history, and social studies, are not a part of the 3 Rs.

In fact, the only thing I objected to, is language.

What foreign language did your daughter learn? (In school)

I know. I was just saying that if you want to strip education to vocational usefulness , you might as well strip it down to reading, 'riting, and 'rithmatic.

History doesn't get you a job either.

And I'll tell you guys right now. I don't give a krapp how much education you have, getting ahead isn't about having 3 degrees.

It's who likes you. That's all there is to it.

Does knowledge help people to like you? Sure does. But in the end, your knowledge ain't getting you into "the club".
