What do you want to do with shears? Personally the only time I would use shears is if I was cutting hair that would be spiked after. Using shears tends to make the hair stand up more so for a girl that has long hair it sorta defeats the purpose. If you are trying to thin her hair out she needs long layers, and I won't try to explain how to do that but you could take her to a hair dresser and watch how they do it for the next time
