They had a whole show on this on my radio station this morning. I was laughing so hard I nearly had to pull over. Here's why:

Because XENICAL works by blocking the absorption of dietary fat, it is likely that you will experience some changes in bowel habits. These bowel changes are a natural effect of blocking the fat from being absorbed. They generally occur during the first weeks of treatment; however, for some people they may continue for 6 months or longer while on XENICAL. These changes may include gas with oily discharge, an increased number of bowel movements, an urgent need to have them, and an inability to control them, particularly after meals containing higher amounts of fat than are recommended.

I used to work with a woman who took Xenical. You would be talking to her one minute, the next she would be running to the toilet. I lost count of the amount of times that happened...and the amount of times that she didn't quite make it...

Interestingly enough, she took this drug for so long it stopped working for her and she stopped losing weight after a time.

This pill just doesn't seem like a sensible way to lose weight. It's not that hard to reduce fat intake and although this pill is supposed to minimise fat absorbtion, it is presumably accompanied by instructions to lower your fat intake to avoid the 'unpleasant' side effects, so what's the difference? I guess there must be some situations where this pill is medically recommended...it doesn't make much sense to me though.

Actually, thinking about this in depth (and I REALLY shouldn't be!). If you have diarrhoea every day then your gut can't be functioning properly. It needs peristalsis to work. If those muscles aren't used, surely they atrophy? Wouldn't it mean long term damage to the intestine?

Would your intestine be able to function properly once you come off the drugs?

As a nurse I really think people will overuse this med just as others are overused. Eat less and exercise....no need for diet pills. Diets pills IF they work are just a quick fix.

I never trust these kinds of pills. In 5 years, warnings will come out on commercials "Did you take such-and-such diet pills? If so, you could suffer a rare but serious side affect: death. Please contact us if you have ever taken it, if you are still alive." (I know I'm exaggerating a tad )

I had a friend that was on this for a year and she lost a fair amount of weight on it....i think the main reason being, she ate low fat most of the time because the times she didnt she would cr@p herself, happened to her once or twice at work. At the time we were both working in a pub and man after she had been to the Loo everyone avoided it..I even had someone ask why there was oil floating on the top of the water down the toilet...lol..Been a couple of years now since shes been off it and has put all her weight back on.
