Good luck on your interview next week! Why will you ask about it, the EAD/AP won't even matter anymore :)

If you didn't change your last name then you don't need to update your SSN.

Thank you!!

I got my EAD card today. Now when i went to apply for SSN today, they couldn't give me because the couldn't verify my EAD on USCIS save database. And, i was given an explanation saying that I need to wait for 4 weeks, so that SSA can verify the EAD. I mean what the heck man!!!!

Unfortunately it takes a while for USCIS to update status in the SAVE database that the SSA uses to confirm immigration status. That is why it is advised to wait at least a couple days or a week after getting EAD to go to the SSA office. Good luck!

the lady at the SSA office told me it takes 10 days from the date your EAD was issued before it get active..

It was exactly 10 days of my EAD when i went to the SSA office.

Mine is still not active that's why the lady explained to me about the "10 day thing"

She said I need to comeback but I explained to her I can't because we're immigrants we don't have a valid drivers license now ..

lucky me she said that she'll try it again till monday.

She gave me a letter states that I applied for SSN and they only need to verify my status and I should receive a letter or my SSN card in 2-3 weeks.

PS: They are nice in the SSA office I went ..

Hi March 2015 AOS Filers,

Just wanted your advice. Do you think it will be okay for me and my husband to travel between states (by car not plane) even without any card in hand yet just my AOS NOA such as interview letter, Biometrics letter, Passport and Marriage Certificate plus the expired I-94 I have? Do you think I will be questioned by CBP officers and be detained ? Did anyone of you experienced this? I just want to be extra careful and don't want to be detained by ICE or anything. Thank you in advance. I really need to accompany my husband for the trip.

You don't need any of that stuff actually but I guess if you want to take it for piece of mind you can. I've already traveled by plane and by car to various states without any problems whatsoever. You are allowed to do as much traveling as you want WITHIN the United States just not outside of it. As long as you have your ID (and probably your valid passport which I never travel without although it's not a requirement) then you are fine. Happy travels! :)

Yes it is perfectly safe. You have your valid foreign passport as an ID. The AOS NOA1, biometrics appt letter and interview letter are the proof of your lawful presence immigration-wise. And the certified copy of the marriage certificate is the proof that both your maiden name (passport) and married name (other documents) belongs to you. Unless you go near the border (Cali, Arizona, Texas, etc), it is very very unlikely that anyone would question you. Carrying all these documents, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. :)

Good luck! :)

I understand that you travelled multiple times with just an ID (passport) with no problems whatsoever and you feel confident about it. While it is very likely that she won't encounter any problems at all, it is strongly advised for immigrants to carry proof of lawful presence with themselves at every step of the immigration process.

In fact, Lawful Permanent Residents (a.k.a. greencard holders) are required by law to carry their greencard with themselves at all times as proof of lawful presence (http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/nativedocuments/M-618.pdf Page 8). I know we are not LPRs yet but it doesn't mean that such rules don't apply to us. The importance of carrying proof of lawful presence at all times has been stressed on this site many times in bunch of threads. I personally think it is very careless to travel with just a passport, but at the end it is one's personal choice.

You are welcome and thank you for the compliment. In fact Arizona is a state where all immigrants are required by law to carry proof of lawful presence.

"U.S. federal law requires all aliens over the age of 14 who remain in the United States for longer than 30 days to register with the U.S. government, and to have registration documents in their possession at all times; violation of this requirement is a federal misdemeanor crime. The Arizona act additionally made it a state misdemeanor crime for an alien to be in Arizona without carrying the required documents. "

Read more here: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_SB_1070

Plus, since Arizona is a border state you can run into some CBP officers.

This all is not to scare you. Just make sure you carry all the documents you mentioned and everything will be fine. :)

I DID say that she should carry them for piece of mind but that I didn't choose to myself Like you said, it's a personal choice. I've lived and travelled in the States for many years before returning here on a K-1 visa so I guess that's why I feel more comfortable and pretty certain that she won't be stopped for any reason and on the off chance she does, having her valid passport and a proof of ID is, in my opinion, enough. Just my opinion though, don't listen to me, in fact take all your papers with you darling , take 'em in a big ole fifty pound folder, strap it to the top of your car. lol. Have fun.
