We were DQ'd on 28 May but didn't get interviewed until 13 Aug. Of course, the delay was due to the embassy remaining mostly closed because of COVID-19. I think they were only handling emergencies and we didn't fall into the category of emergency. Currently I would imagine there is a backlog of people waiting on interviews and the embassy seems to be taking a phased approach to their reopening. It might take time. Definitely use this time to ensure your documents are in order and research other experiences online. The constant that I am noticing is that there is no constant. You may see a list of required documents but be sure that have everything else no matter how unrelated it may appear to be. The consulate officer has overall approval authority.

Thanks so much!! I'm seeing a lot about insurance and it seems like it might just be luck of the draw if we get asked about it or not.  Both my husband and I are in Japan and covered by Japanese insurance and don't have insurance in the US.  My plan was getting coverage for us on the state exchange once we arrive, do we need to buy insurance before the interview?

We were just lucky enough to be asked about insurance 😆.

My view is that it is better to prepare some insurance quotes and prepare financial info to show that you guys could cover the insurance cost once you both arrive. Just in case!

I tried to check your profile, but there is no information on your timeline. you might wrote it somewhere, but if i may ask again, how long you are waiting since you got your DQ to when you get your interview date? I am still waiting for my interview date atm.

I got DQed July 27 and the embassy contacted me about an interview just yesterday. Didn’t expect this to go this quick at all.

Yes, they emailed me. They had scheduled my interview for mid September but it didn’t work for me so I sent them a request to reschedule the appointment via their online system. They got back to me the next day and scheduled my interview for a date that I requested for, which is mid October.

When did you get DQed? I am sure you will hear from the embassy soon :)

Yes I will share how my interview went! But since my interview is 2 months away from now, maybe you will be having your interview before me even ;)

well, if the interview date that i get from the embassy later won't work because of some circumstances, then i might need to change the date just like what you did, lol. my DQ is 18th of August, so i has been still a week. depends on what i read on the forum, it seems 1~2 months to get the date, hopefully it will work the same for me too. looking forward to hear your news about the interview 😊

You said it my friend. It seems there is a heavy emphasis on insurance lately. My wife's visa was slightly delay because the embassy wanted to see either military Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders or a letter from my civilian company regarding my return to the US. Part of me believes it ties back to insurance availability but who knows. If purchasing insurance prior to your interview is within your means it might not hurt. It's probably better that not having anything at all when you arrive for your interview. Not sure if this helps but good luck!
