Legal change of name certificate

Hi fellow VJ-ers,

Background: My fiancee who lives in Montreal had her K1 interview a couple of weeks ago (at the Montreal consulate), and the consular officer asked her for a legal change of name document from her country of origin (India). The problem is that her name in her new passport is different from her old passport (she changed her name 6 months ago). He gave her a 221g and asked her to provide this doc.

She wrote to the Indian High Commission in Canada asking for a "Change of name certificate" buy they will not give any other letter or certificate to prove the change of name, because according to them, the updated passport is proof of change of name.

Question to my fellow VJers from India : Is it possible to get such a doc from India ? Any tips on where specifically to get this doc from ?

The CO is looking for evidence your fiance changed her name legally from her old passport to the new one. She should be prepared to document the reason behind the name change. Being as yet unmarried discounts a change from maiden to a married name.

Suggest providing copies of the document(s) she submitted as proof 6 months ago with the passport office.
