I'm planning for my honey to take some classes in community college before applying for jobs. Does anyone know of the requirement and fees? Does she need to take TOEFL? The fees are what international student pay or residence pay for.

Um, that would depend on the particular school's requirements and fees.

EAch school is different with regarding to fees. Some schools base the residency criteria on the US spouse, thats what my school did. I just had to show proof (VA tax forms) that my wife (US citizen) had been a resident of VA for at least 1 yr, and I got charged the VA resident rate. One has to contact each school to see what they wil charge. As well some schools may make him take a math/english placement exam. In short its best to contact the school, explain the situation and see what they have to say.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Like they said it all depends on the school.

My husband (USC) is a professor in a college and I was going to do some courses whilst waiting for the AOS/EAD to come through, but we soon pooh-poohed that idea cause it went from free tuition (because I am one of his dependants and he works there) to being charged international student rates, because my AOS isn't approved, as yet.

yea - depends on the college. When I get to the states I'll be attending Pima in Tucson. Luckily because I'll be a us military spouse, I dont require a greencard to start and i'll be paying resident fees. If I wasnt going to be a military spouse I'd have to wait for my greencard and have to live in AZ for 1 year before I'm not an 'international' student.

I had a certificate from my college university stating that the medium of instruction was English, so they didn't require me to take the TOEFL. As for tuition rates, check with your school. Good luck!

I am also in California, and here they require 1 year of living in California WITH A GREEN CARD before you become eligible for the resident tuition. But you'd better check with your local college. Community colleges are rather cheap for the residents, in our case it's $20 per unit. For all others tuition and fees are considerably higher.

Also, as far as I understand, community colleges are obliged to give the opportunity to enroll to every local person who qualifies (has High School diploma or equivalent). Thus, your spouse can study English in the community college. They normally give a placement test in English and Math, and depending on test results you may or may not chose certain classes. TOEFL should not be required for a community college.
