Retail giant Walmart to raise wages for US staff

The annual retail customer satisfaction survey just came out day before yesterday. "Always low wages" ™ doesn't buy you great customer service, apparently. Wal-Mart comes in dead last with their worst reading since 2007. Coincidence that they come out with this "we're gonna pay you more" press release the day after?

Wal-Mart is now well behind Target (+4% to 80), Meijer (78), and Sears (-5% to 73).

And yet, Walmart is full of customers, while Target and Sears are like ghost towns. I suspect that either customer service is not that important to Walmart shoppers, or people bring an agenda when answering a survey.

No idea what Sears looks like inside. The only one around here is at the place that I don't go to - the mall. Whenever I go to Target, it is well visited. Not chaotic or overly crowded or anything but that's a good thing in my book. Wal-Mart looks busy from the distance - and that's as close as I get.

I think it's doable. Granted it wouldn't be the most comfortable of living, but doable. Working staggered shifts would help diminish or eliminate the need for daycare.

Doable? Hell, there are many thousands in the So Cal area that make it, many immigrants in that mix. 2 people working 6 days a week is close to 4K a month, it can and is done every day. There are school lunch programs providing breakfast and lunch and in some cases, dinner in L.A. We have Cal Fresh (food stamps was do derogatory) for these families and since most don't have health insurance, if the kids were born here they get MediCal. I drive through an area regularly that consists of these folks, Santa Ana. It's doable but I don't understand the fascination with having the newest and biggest SUV on $10 an hour, do you really need a Nissian Armada or Infiniti Q45? Just saying.

Okay, so based on the definition of "live" that was set earlier in the thread, the answer as to whether one can "live" on that wage is clearly no.

surviving without welfare.

it is painful, isn't it.

If you cannot afford to live in an area then move .

everything just has a childlike simplicity in bootstrap land.

Lowest common denominator. You can survive on a WalMart salary only if you're subsidized by the rest of the taxpayers with food stamps and healthcare. WTG WalMart! Having said that I also recognize nobody was ever supposed to live on minimum wages, but in reality many have no choice. Try to remember that next time your shopping for something and perhaps go for Made in USA if you can find it.

Okay, so bad attempt at sarcasm. If they didn't have the big SUV and attendant car payment, they wouldn't need the help. Near the Home Depot where I live is a Taco Bell. I've seen two of the workers parking there several times, one has a relatively new Chevy Tahoe and the other a Nissan Pathfinder. Given that both have car seats in them I reckon them to be mothers. No further description or I'll be flamed for stereotyping but I know what I see. Aside from the car payment, the gas they use is at the high end. Drive around some of these "low income" neighborhoods and check out their rides, are we subsidizing meals or wheels?

4K a month for family of 4 is doable EVEN without the subsidies. But, get a $600+ car payment, gas bills and you're gonna need em.
