[...] the "fattest" nation in the world, it's actually Mexico.

Mrs. T-B. and I independently observed this. Even the Mexicans in the U.S. whom we've seen (chiefly the women) have a propensity toward plumpness. One theory (uninvestigated & unproven) is that when the Mexican women marry, plumpness is considered to be a sign of happiness or something positive. It would be interesting to delve into this to learn whether there's any societal influence.

In our grandparents' and great-grandparents' day, one might hear "A fat child is a happy child."

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Diet ---> obesity ---> comorbidities <---> influence of blood fats

Here's an interesting summary about using statins for cholesterol control:

I think it is more likely the large bags of chips they eat with every meal - a huge bag of Tostitos and a bottle of Diet Pepsi, each.

the large bags of chips they eat with every meal - a huge bag of Tostitos and a bottle of Diet Pepsi, each.

The diet part of the Diet Pepsi cancels out the calories of the Tostitos (medically proven).

A couple of years ago, I came home, and this dialogue ensued:

Mrs. T-B.: I bought you cheap.

T-B.: What did you say?

Mrs. T-B.: I bought you cheap.

T-B.: You bought me cheap? What the dickens does THAT mean? I'm not that cheap. And don't let Immigration hear you say that.

Mrs. T-B. [frustrated]: Cheap, CHEAP! I bought you CHEAP!

Further investigation revealed that she had gone to the store and bought me a bag of potato cheaps, si man. :bonk:

Same here. Eating cr4p at McDs or any other joint was a treat and only under extreme circumstances. I can't stand the smell of their restaurants anymore although when I want to cut a couple of minutes off of my life expectancy I prefer Wendy's of Chick-Fil-A when I happen to come across one.

I only eat Chinese food when I cook it, never at restaurants; not even when I'm in China.

Same here, when we were kids we were "lucky" if we got to eat McDonald's once a month. I've had the smell of some fried food places turn my stomach like that as well, it's also a clear sign that the oil in the fryolator needs to be changed. My working in the HVAC industry for over 21 years has given me the opportunity to see a lot of the restaurant kitchen exhaust fans and ductwork in most of the local joints. Some are kept nice and clean and some are so dirty that I wouldn't eat there if it were the last place on earth. Surprisingly enough the big chains are ususally the cleanest because corporate keeps them on a stringent maintenance schedule. the local Mom & Pop joints can be really dirty, but I've found the Chinese restaurants to be the dirtiest overall.

Oh man don't get me started, tonight we are having klap (that's what the text said). Then I saw the picture of the king crab legs. Last Friday we had ramp (lamb).

My wife and I love lamb. We don't find many around here that like it though. Nothing like thinly sliced lamb for hot pot!

See the links in References #5 & #6 for some risk-calculators.

Tying it to calculated risk factor is not a great idea, because many of the people in this group have little to no clinical evidence of heart disease. It is appropriate for people who are at high demonstrated risk for cardiac events or stroke, but they should otherwise be giving a lot more consideration to the long term of effects of blocking cholesterol synthesis before giving people this drug.

My doctor doesn't prescribe statins without doing a carotid artery ultrasound except for cases of familial hypercholesterolemia. If there's no evidence of plaque, you don't need them. Once the long term risks of statins become better established, I believe this will become the standard.

Also may have to do with lack of exercise. I remember reading a study of the ethnic breakdown of physical activity somewhere. It concluded that the group with the most exercise is whites, followed by blacks, and dead last were Hispanics. Hispanic women, especially, got next to zero exercise per week.

There also is at least one medical study that suggests that almost everyone should be on a statin above a certain age.
