Hello everyone!

I arrived here in Florida last jan 18 and got married today feb 18. They will send us our marriage certificate 2-3 weeks from now via mail. My I-94 will expire on april 17.

Here are our concerns:

1. When is the best time to get my SSN? Should we just wait for the marriage certificate?

2. In my new vaccination record: should i use my last name or my married last name?

1. go in, apply in VISA name. Just show I-94 printout and Passport. then go back the next day, get the SSN (number, not card) or learn of new problems. DO NOT apply in different name, married name, as it's a hassle and delays all. If you use other name after marriage, show an EAD card to SSA office when you have it, AFTER you have SSN in VISA Name, months later.

OK ?

2. Depends. why you getting new vaccination record? If for AOS, and you want greencard in married name, you should keep pushing all docs using the new married name.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Question.. My spouse and I just got married on 1-11-15. His I-94 expires 3-30-15. Someone told us that we have to wait to apply for social security number for him until we get the work authorization. Is that not true? or am I misunderstanding?

Also, since we have filed for the AOS, is there anything else that we should be doing now while we wait?

Thanks!

But we're already married and just waiting for the marriage certificate before applying for a ssn. Would that still give us problems? Delays and all?

Based on the site that it is best to get a ssn before I-94 expires, atleast get it 14 days before it expires.

why wait ? apply in visa name, ask for SAVE db lookup at the SSA office, showing the I-94 and passport, get SSN in VISA name.

It's easier, not cause any delay.

Why to delay? Don't you want to participate in USA society ? A SSN helps with that, always.

It's dead easy to change the name after you have the SSN, with EAD or GC in married name.

Somethings amiss, you are asking questions about what I wrote. What's up ?

If you truly want to apply for SSN in married name, you will delay the processing, cannot be 'next day' assignment, as SSA sends out for DHS verification, and you've no federal document showing the new married name. You've a state document, and based on a K-1 visa holder, you don't get 'next day' assignment, ever. DHS verification sucks, it causes a delay, and usually the report comes back way after the 74th day past POE event.

Come on, go get a SSN next week. in Visa Name.

Use the married name in all AOS docs, then you'll have EAD and GC in married name - which the SSA clerks will recognize and change same day, later. Not now, later.

No. absolutely wrong. He, as a K-1 visa holder, could apply next day,

as I-94s are instant, electronic now, and the SAVE DB entry is instant as well.

Any SSA clerk can find him in the SAVE DB, 1 day (or more) after POE event.

Tick Tock, go get one, this upcoming week.
