We got a RFE for our I-864. The USCIS asked us to resubmit I-864 with a joint sponsor. Now my wife’s dad is the joint sponsor. Is there an advantage in showing that he is father in low? If there is how should I do it? Should I ask my father in law to state in his cover letter that I am his son in law?

Your joint sponsor needs to submit a cover letter? There is a place on the I-864 for the relationship, btw.

Jul 5 - Receipt date for I-130 petition for my over 21 brother and his wife (both in the UK)

2024

Feb 23 - Sent USCIS a message asking for a processing update

May 6 - Received an email response saying things were progressing normally but that waiting times might be longer

Feb 25, 26 & 28 - got emails saying that the cases had been transferred to another office, then to my local office, and then just transferred and are being processed

Mar 17 - got email, attached to one case number only, saying that my A number was changed relating to the I-130 filing

My mother-in-law was my joint sponsor. I didn't submit a cover letter with anything, except the explanation letter of why my husband didn't file taxes for 2005 'cos he was a student. They probably figured out that she was my mother-in-law from my husband's birth certificate or from the I-864 form. Good luck.

No, saying that it is your father in law won't make a difference in how "good" they think your evidence of financial support is. All that matters is that the sponsor makes enough money to qualify to be a joint sponsor.
