Arbil (Iraq) (AFP) - Kurdish peshmerga forces have repulsed a major attack by the Islamic State jihadist group southwest of Iraqi Kurdistan's capital Arbil, officials said Wednesday.

"The attack which was launched at 8:00 pm (1700 GMT on Tuesday) was foiled. It lasted four hours and we killed 34 IS members," Sirwan Barzani, the local peshmerga commander, told AFP.

These are the folks the US should be rallying behind, not a bunch of sissy Sunnis.

Isn't the Kurds also Sunni's?

Some are Sunni Muslims and some are Shi'ite Muslims. Other religions include Judaism, Christianity, Yarsan, Yazidi, and Zorasterianism.

As a whole, the Kurdish people are adherents to a large number of different religions and creeds, perhaps constituting the most religiously diverse people of West Asia.

I ask because I read this.

Today, the majority of Kurds are Sunni Muslim, belonging to the Shafi school.

There is also a minority of Kurds who are ShiaMuslims, primarily living in the Ilam and Kermanshahprovinces of Iran, Central and south eastern Iraq (Fayli Kurds)

The political subdivisions of Iraq are labeled Kurd, Sunni, and Shi'ite. I am sure not all Sunnis are sissies like the Arab Iraqi version seems to be.

The vast majortiy of Kurds are Muslim, but some are Yezidi - mainly in north-west Iran, but also in Turkey. About 3 million Turkish Kurds are Alevis, a religion which has it's origins in the Shi'ite Muslim section. However, many do not consider themselves to be Muslims and there are hints of previous Christian connections. They even have a 'Father Christmas? figure, who gives gifts to the children on December 25th.
All Kurds celebrate Nevroz, the Kurdish New Year, on 21st March. They light fires and this is an indication of their association with Zoroastrians.
Since the drawing-up of borders at the treaty of Lausanne, bordering countries have played off one group of Kurds against the other. Syria welcomed the Kurdish Turks under Abdullah Öcalan, whilst removing citizenship from their own Kurdish population.
