Hello,

My fiancé is a US citizen, I am foreigner however I lived in the US from the age of two until I was 18. I was 18 and 7 months when I left the US. My parents came to the US legally, but stayed past their b1 visa. They did file taxes the whole time living in the US.

I just had my K1 interview last week, the consular had requested a different security clearance which I sent. However, today I received a call asking for proof of payment to the public schools I attended while living in the US. I was just a minor when I attended and I am now 28. I've been out of the US for ten years. Do they want proof my parents paid taxes the whole time I attended school? I am confused. I am not sure where to proceed from here. I never thought they would request that.

Public school is free for all Including illegal children of illegal immigrants (very personal feelings). They came in legally but it became illegal when they overstayed. I simply digress on that specific topic. To answer your question there is nothing you can do from that angle but you can get transcripts to show that you were in school here. Cumulative files from elementary and transcripts from middle and high. That should help prove your case.

No public schools are free. The federal government give funds to the state but it's free for all students. Parents have a choice on whether they want to do private which isn't free. Charter schools are considered public as well. I'm a product of public schools and a teacher in the public school. I have been for 7 years and I know that each student has about a $8'000+ price tag on their heads. Meaning the school that they attend gets that per student that attends the specific school. I also see that immigrants whether legal or illegal get extra support and the English speaking citizen get the minimum. Like I said I digress. Not so fair!
